NIB- York's haunted past
As Halloween approaches, York’s ghosts prepare for their seasonal scare-fest. According to the Ghost Research Foundation International, York is the most haunted city in the world, with more than 500 recorded sightings. York’s long history of bloodshed and grizzly tales has made it a hub for paranormal activity. There have been the most sightings at Clifford’s Tower, which supposedly drips with blood every year after the 12th-century Jewish persecution. At St. Mary’s Abbey, a lost monk is said to roam the ancient ruins. Not to mention the Red Lion pub, which is haunted by the infamous highwayman, Dick Turpin. Which spots will you be visiting first?
CIB- The fl-uni experience
Credit where credit is due, lockdown was particularly effective at stopping the transmission of illnesses - almost as if it was used for a reason! Now coming out of the pandemic and back to a normal campus experience again in my third year, I suddenly feel like I am back in my first year. Primarily due to the uncanny amount of colds and flus I’ve picked up already. It’s been humbling having to go from cries of “I’m just built differently!” - after never catching covid - to pleas of “I need more warm ribena!” after being completely floored by a simple cold for the third time this term. You just gotta love the fl-uni experience. - Michael Athey

MUSE Reads: What are we reading at the minute?
With cosy nights upon us, the Nouse editors tell us about their go to reads right now.
Lucy, Deputy Editor: A Little Life
I’m reading A Little Life because TikTok wouldn’t stop going on about how good it is… it’s long but worth it so far. Following 4 men in NYC through their 20s and 30s, it has been hailed as a modern day classic and tackles almost every part of the human experience with detail and grace.
Neve, Deputy Features: The Throne of Glass Series
I can generally only read teenage fiction during term-time because the academic reading takes up too much brain function. The series follows a young assassin embarking on a tumultuous adventure in an unstable kingdom.
Kendra, Fashion Editor: The Passenger
This 2021 re-release of a 1938 novel uses a fictional story to insightfully investigate the persecution of Jewish people amid the violence of Kristallnacht. The blending of fiction and fact is perfect for me as an English and History student.
