October brought about the Nouse Elections as Jorgah and Isaac were elected as our new Sports editors, joined by Simon and Izzy as Deputy Sports Editors. This month marked a renewed passion for sports here at Nouse, as our team dove into stories, in-depth coverage and insightful commentary on both University and National events.
In just a few weeks, the team has laid a solid foundation, bringing in new angles, connecting with our writers and creating a collaborative and friendly environment here at Nouse. We are focused on building strong connections with our writers and sports teams across the University. We are excited to recruit more writers as the year progresses and it’s exciting to think about where we can take sports reporting this year. Our social media has also had a revamp – go check us out @nousesport on Instagram!
Our lineup of stories this month showcases our diversity in content.
One of the most talked-about sports moments this month has been the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the manager of the England men’s football team. Deputy Sports Editor Izzy delves into this development in her latest and favourite article, which examines Tuchel’s managerial history and explores what this means for the future of English football.
Simon’s favourite article to write this month was ‘College Sport Changed My Life,’ which is a heartfelt advocacy for the college sports system. Through personal anecdotes and engaging storytelling, he shares how participating in college football really enhanced his University experience. This piece resonates with anyone who has experienced the unique challenges and triumphs of being a student-athlete.
Jorgah’s favourite article this month is “Catch the Action: Live Sports in York This Winter” in which she explores the exciting live sports events happening in York over the coming months. From choosing the best bus stops to providing ticket links, this article serves as a brilliant guide for sports fans in a city that isn’t typically known for its bustling live sports scene.
Last but not least, Isaac’s favourite article is his piece ‘Basketball’s Final Gift to its Greatest Ambassador: A Reaction to Bronny James’ NBA Debut’. In his article, Isaac reflects on the significance of Bronny’s debut in a thought-provoking piece that explores nepotism in sports, resonating even with those who aren’t basketball fans.
We are fortunate to have a diverse range of interests within our editorial team, and we wanted to take a moment to share some of our favourite sporting moments, whether from the university level or on the national stage. Izzy particularly enjoyed the thrilling Rugby League final and celebrated England Netball's victory in their test series against New Zealand on their home turf. She also enjoyed the Badminton Women’s A team triumph over Lancaster, marking a successful month for the university team. As we look ahead to November, Izzy is particularly excited for the England vs New Zealand Rugby Union match, the Brazilian Grand Prix, and the kickoff of the Roses 2025 club fitness sessions.
Simon’s favourite moment in October was witnessing the Yorkshire Marathon, which proved to be an incredibly inspirational day for everyone involved. He also enjoyed England’s cricket test match against Pakistan, especially as Pakistan staged a historic comeback after the first test. In November, Simon is looking forward to more cricket, especially the England V New Zealand test match starting at the end of the month.
Jorgah’s standout moment in October was Wolverhampton Wanderers, or you might just know them as the team that still is yet to win a Premier League match this season, scoring a last minute equaliser against Brighton. This doubled their points this season, to two… Jorgah is excited for the Battle of the Birds between James and Derwent and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, curious to see what outrageous surprises and spectacles this year’s event will bring.
Rodri’s Ballon d'Or win was one of Isaac’s highlights of the month, marking a significant milestone for the midfielder; however, it also caused a lot of chaos among the footballing elite. In addition, Isaac enjoyed covering the Yorkshire Marathon on a very wet and windy Sunday afternoon in October. He is looking forward to branching out beyond articles in the next month as we approach the Battle of the Birds and other exciting sporting events.
Looking back on their first month, the team is thrilled with the progress they have made and the foundation they are building for the future. In November, national sports action ramps up with the football international break, as well as exciting fixtures in cricket and rugby. Closer to home, the highly anticipated Battle of the Birds will also take place, and we will be providing coverage of this event. With the collective passion, creativity, and dedication of this group, the sports section at Nouse is on track for an exciting year ahead.
We are just getting started!
