An elegant evening ensued when the glamorous Fashion and Cocktail societies of the University of York collaborated at Pitcher and Piano on Thursday night. The celebration of clothing and cocktails carried an impressive turn out at the venue that resembled an exquisite fashion reception after-party. The atmosphere was a mix of classy etiquette and cool chic, with beautiful attire to compliment the drinks. We caught up with some of the best dressed to find out their inspiration for the evening.
Tilly wears an eccentric Topshop floral skater dress. “I’m a huge admirer of the 1960’s, so this has been a big inspiration for my outfit tonight.” The dark background with bold flower print adds a grungy edge to the dress, and the high-neck design is a promising trend for the spring. She teams the dress with dainty Vivienne Westwood-esque heels that add a feminine charm to the outfit. Tilly also describes the bumblebee broach that completes the look with a dash of retro. “My friend got me the broach from a fair as a present. I love how it adds a vintage touch to the outfit.”
Will’s waistcoat is a classic piece, which inspires a new perspective rather than the traditional suit for a formal evening. His favourite feature is the trilby, a unique accessory to add to his attire, but works remarkably well in creating suave individual image. Trilbies are iconic from the 1960’s, yet hats of all shapes and sizes are a popular trend for Spring/Summer. “I think it distinguishes such a classic style,” he says, “it really combines the past and the modern era.”

The embellishment on Maire’s playsuit adds a touch of glamour to her look, which we love! “It’s from New Look on ASOS. It’s so practical and comfortable but also very flattering.” Her fashion inspirations for the evening are Kim Kardashian combined with Alexa Chung’s tomboy style. “The Little Black Dress is a timeless piece, and this is my take on it.” Maire’s playsuit can be dressed up and dressed down; teamed with heels and a clutch for a night out, or your favourite Converse and a kimono for a cute summer look.
Beth tells me how she was super excited for Cocktail Chic and treated herself to the gorgeous lilac shoes from New Look. “They’re a change from the usual black footwear I’d normally go for, and I definitely can’t wait to wear them more often!” Pastel shades are perfect for summer; combined with her quilted layered dress from ASOS and gold geometric earrings from Primark, she invents a refreshing angle on a classic style.
“I’m a big fan of the TV series ‘Suits’. Harvey Specter is my inspiration behind what I’m wearing tonight”. Jared’s matching suit features a Glenurquhart check by Charles Tyrwhitt, which was a unique and sophisticated combination at the event. He wears this with a black tie in a Full Windsor knot and spread collar shirt. “My favourite aspect of my outfit is definitely the wide lapel on the jacket. It’s a very classic feature on my suit.”
