@ 3rd year Stude

97th is a bit extreme, but in the case of 30th, I recall they ranked Manchester below 40th once and Manchester is a better university than Lancaster or Loughborough, So is Edinburgh.

Edinburgh and Bristol has far more high calibre applicants than Lancaster.

When I applied to York, I looked at the league tables and only applied to 5 of the top 10 universities on the Guardian and Times league tables. In short, I chose York based on the league tables and word of mouth reputation. As an Oxbridge reject, my choice was between York, Nottingham and Durham. York was above the others at the time - so I chose to apply to York.

Whether you like it or not - the league tables matter. They influence 16/17/18 year old 6th form and gap year students, particularly those who may be the first in their family to attend university. I remember sitting in my 6th form computer room and going through the league tables with my college mates.

I would never apply to any university that is not in the Top 15 of the league tables. Would you really apply for a university that is 97th or 43rd or 30th?

Mult purpose? So someone with a non-wheelchair based disability has to have a low sink just because they only bothered to design one style of diabled access room?

Someone has made a serious design error here, however we try and find an appropriate use for the room.

Exactly what @Suren says. The RAE score, funding and membership of the Russell group are what truly matter at an academic level. Though in terms of attracting good students the league tables do matter.

@Andy P - oh dear you think that getting a ACA trainee scheme in the city is the same as a job at GS, no wonder they didn't take you #overconfident.

@ # says - fortunately there are no incompetent idiots in the old boys club.

The charity work experience is impressive. Also interesting she "loved the culture" - a remarkably anti-female one. Congratulations though, all the best for the future.

International students are probably the most interesting people on campus.

They come from abroad, *alone* and study and live in another country during their formative years. They bring a wealth to campus - they are go getters. Many come from wealthy families, others are here on scholarships with the aim of improving their lives through education. Misanthropists love to hate on international students. I am sure that the academic misconduct by the few students is just a misunderstanding. Britain is, after all, a culture shock. It is advertised as an upstanding country with the Queen as the figurehead, but when students arrive in York they are greeted with drunken louts, women students wearing stripper heels as fashion, hostility etc.

"I think the University should at least be a little bit more strict with [all] prospective students’ English level."

Definitely. Being unable to communicate properly undermines any sense of...well, community. It's probably a significant contributing factor to any general opposition to immigration in the UK; cultural differences will never be resolved without good communication, but with good communication such differences can sometimes be celebrated and shared. Two of my housemates are from China, and if the subjects they are studying have a minimum IELTS requirement of 6.5, then all I can say is that is not good enough. Many foreign students do speak excellent English though.

@thevoice

Do not comment on situations you know nothing about. The Bank of England gap year scheme takes on students by application as with any other gap year scheme and there's no guarantee of what work you may do. They DO put gap year students in positions like secretarial work and the kind of general a-level entry type jobs.
And this IS coming from someone who knows what they're talking about, so don't degrade the achievements of others with your own uniformed, bitter speculations.

Yeah, because it's really hard to find out the addresses of houses where you already have a picture and a street name... The only real danger would be if they were posting the current tenants' information, which they aren't so what does it matter?
And if you're worried about student properties being targeted, the reason they get targeted is that students are notoriously bad for leaving doors and windows unlocked so y'know, there's a pretty easy way around that one!

Erm @student (not so) in the know, mental disabilities are completely irrelevant here. It's about someone with a physical disability who requires an accessible room with lower sinks etc having to be on the top floor. And why are high rooms good for depressed people... unless you're making a really black joke

I don't want to come across too Daily Mail but if the international students are attending a university then their English should be up to scratch enough to understand an academic misconduct tutorial and the university shouldn't have to spend money getting it translated into foreign languages. Surely the problem is from something other than language barriers?
