A slice of the sausage?
By Letters — February 13, 2007
Dear Nouse,
I am surprised that York Vision has not yet properly addressed our concerns on the closure of many portering lodges. Their latest edition merely contained a short article entitled “Croker: 24 hour portering must stay”.
The Toby Awards
By Letters — February 13, 2007
Dear Nouse, I want to compliment Toby Green on a very well written piece on the issue of homosexuality and Christian faith: “Praying for recognition” (January 23 2007. M10). I thought it was balanced and fair, and certainly wasn’t attempting to grab a headline or provoke in any way. I hope it was clear, during [...]
In defence of Christian sensibilities
By Letters — February 13, 2007
Dear Nouse,
I wish to respond to your article, “Religious protest over gay rights” by defining the concequences of passing the Sexual Orientation Regulations (SORs).
Star Letter
By Letters — January 23, 2007
Dear Sir,
I wish to refute the allegation that the Rugby Club was responsible for ripping off a £10 towel dispenser (no condom machines then) in Derwent College toilets and removing a bowl of flowers and several scarves (Nicky Woolf, 28 November 2006). As your issue of 9 November 1967 makes clear, the culprits were hooligans from Hull and Durham Universities.
Elitism and snobbery
By Letters — January 23, 2007
Dear Nouse,
I am outraged at the decision to once again hold a ‘chav’ themed event on campus. The image of the ‘chav’ is subject to enough demonisation without Derwent College providing a forum for over 500 students to spend an entire evening ridiculing and stereotyping their peers.
College sport: get in
By Letters — January 23, 2007
Dear Nouse,
I am writing in protest at your article on college sport last edition. I can’t help but feel you have overlooked the entire point of college sport. It aims to make competitive sport more accessible to more students, those who don’t have the time or ability to play for the University.
Heslington East: environmentally unsound
By Letters — January 23, 2007
The plans for Heslington East are unimaginative, environmentally damaging and driven more by money than academic logic. If the government is serious about environmental performance it must turn down this application. The proposed lake is not needed and, even by the evidence of the University’s own consultants, unlikely to be sustainable.
Star Letter
By Letters — November 28, 2006
Dear Nouse, I am disgusted to hear that the University of Manchester’s Student Direct has been the victim of a ‘coup’ perpetrated by an alliance of thier Islamic Society and the Socialist Workers’ Party. Consequently, the paper’s content has degenerated into a barely literate combination of paranoid Islamo-fascist rantings and ill-informed middle-class pseudo-revolutionary rhetoric. Amidst [...]
Corporate courtesans and happy customers
By Letters — November 28, 2006
Dear Nouse, I found it striking that the Chair of the Biosciences Society, Beckie Cooper, when pledging her support for StemCell Ventures Inc.’s investment, gave explicit assurance that she would back such projects ‘only as long as the aims of the department remain academic rather than in securing lucrative contracts such as this one.’ Naturally, [...]
Star Letter: Porters praise
By Letters — November 7, 2006
Dear Nouse,
I am shocked to hear the porters are going to be trashed. They are a college resource and if you love your college you should want to keep them; they are at least as important as college bars. I love the porters – especially Keith (followed closely by Ron then Phil!).
The porters have always leant a lisening ear for the students.
Xtra-time for Halifax events
By Letters — November 7, 2006
I was saddened to read that Daniel Whitehead doesn’t like Xtra events, and as such is dismissing the Xtra VIP Card as a waste of money. It also surprised me, as I can’t remember seeing Daniel at any recent Xtra events, and his article left me wondering where he collected his obviously highly-informed and balanced information from. Despite the fire alarms disrupting the Xtra Beach Party this Freshers’ Fortnight, everybody I’ve spoken to so far has told me they really enjoyed the event and will attend in the future (whether or not they have a VIP Card).
Breakfast Blues
By Letters — November 7, 2006
In response to last issue’s ‘Last Word’: we have received food vouchers for the Roger Kirk Centre and yeah, it’s pretty generous of the University. Officially.
However, since we have been given breakfast vouchers, the University must assume that we can’t make it without a kitchen. But with Roger Kirk only opening at 9am, needing to be up at the library at 9:15, I can’t get it from there. By the time I’m free, the Roger Kirk centre has finished serving breakfast.
Star Letters: Costly campus
By Letters — October 11, 2006
Having used the college bars for the first time this year, I was disgusted to see that the prices of drinks have gone up again! I thought the university bars were supposed to be cheap? I remember when a double-vodka red bull was only 2.50, a bargain!
Stop Badgering
By Letters — October 11, 2006
For quite some time there have been complaints in the York press about the increase of the student population in Badger Hill. The residents of this estate are unhappy that landlords are buying properties and letting them to students, complaining that they bring nothing to the community. Although we are unlikely to fill their schools, I know that the shops are relied on by the students because I lived there last year and found the shops convenient to use, as did many other students I know who lived in the area.
Montey’s Moan
By Letters — October 11, 2006
This bar is truly crap and empty most of the time. it’s staff are rude and it serves the worst cocktails I have ever had in my whole life. If I want to pay that much for a crap cocktail I’ll go to the Living room or Capital (at least the staff are friendly!). Also the music is cheesy popular stuff, that could hardly be classed as ‘rock’. Avoid this place at all costs!
