Societies: Politics

The University of York has many active political societies, this guide details what campus has to offer for budding political activists

Conservative and Unionist Association

York Tories describe themselves as the most active political society at the University of York, and one of the most active groups among all University Conservative associations and Conservative Future branches throughout the United Kingdom. Their activities include debates, speaker events, socials, annual balls and conferences. Their aim is to expand their Conservative spirit on campus, as well as help local Conservative MPs and prospective MPs.

Green Party

The University of York Green Party seeks to promote the views and policies of the Green party. Their activities include but are not limited to talks led by guest speakers on a range of political topics as well as cross-party debated and socials. The society campaigns on both social and environmental issues.

Labour Society

The Labour Club has been in Nouse quite a bit this year with discussions over disaffiliation. With strong views the club upholds the beliefs and values of the Party, and helps campaign for local Labour politicians. The society also campaigns on campus on issues they feel strongly about. They debate their policies and in some cases disagree with the National Party when their views conflict.

Liberal Democrats

The York University Lib Dems is the University branch of The Liberal Democrats. The Party, in its own words, exists to build a “fair, free and open society” in which “liberty, equality and community” are balanced, and no one shall be “enslaved by poverty or ignorance”. The University branch follows and supports these ideals. The society also helps local Lib Dem politicians with campaigning throughout the year.

Politics Society

From the Arab Spring, to the crisis in Ukraine and from border conflicts to the situation in the Middle East, we are all affected and influenced. The Politics society aims at becoming the platform of discussion and debate about current political thinking and affairs. As a society their objective is to host debates and talks with various specialists from different fields on several topics. Other than that, the society organises epic night outs and parties, with the Christmas Ball and the Summer BBQ being some of the most popular events of the year.

Socialist Society (UoY Student Socialist Society)

The University is founded on famously liberal principles and this society welcomes all those with an interest in the practices and arguments of socialism, seeking to expand its members’ knowledge through understanding and discussing left-wing theories.
