With huge white puffa jackets and a good handful of festive snow falling you’d be forgiven for thinking that Stay Another Day is another typical Christmas record but there is nothing less Christmassy than the true sentiment behind it. The song is said to have been written by band member Tony Mortimer with his brother’s suicide in mind. The record became a love song and a huge hit being the bands’ only number one and the Christmas number one in 1994. Its prominent position in TV Christmas countdowns is testament to the catchy lyrics and beautiful vocals created by Mortimer and not the terrible 90’s outfits (those trousers?!?) and creative camera work (well parodied by Mariachi Doritos) shown in the video. ‘Stay Another Day’ is a charming piece of pop that will always have a place in my heart as the number one in the year I was born.
