Men’s rowers impress at British Championships

The University of York Boat Club Men’s squad competed in their first race of the season at the British Championships last weekend, finishing ninth overall.

The double, comprising of Edward Van de Straaten and Stuart Hosie, raced on early Saturday morning. Due to problems with the boat the double struggled to achieve their target, but their effort could not be faulted.

The eight, comprising of Max Hawkins, Lloyd Hughes, David Lynas, Tom Calvert, Frank Flight, Robert Mills, Patrick Somerville-Large and Daniel Hodkinson with cox Natalie Smith raced on Sunday. The eight pulled a fantastic time in the time trial. However, the race was fiercely competitive, with some crews at Olympic standard, and as a result they only reached the E Final. But the eight managed to come second in the E final, beating the likes of Manchester University, Oxford Brooks and Granta.

The result puts them 9th best in the Universities eights division.

The next race in the calendar for both the Senior Men’s and Women’s squad will be Small Boats head, taking place on the 17th November in York.
