How have the club performed so far this season?

“We are just getting going this season, having competed in the BUCS Hill climb finishing in 17th and the BUCS Cyclo Cross over the winter, the road season is now picking up. We have been doing some local racing but Roses will be one of the first real tests for the club so far this year.”

What are you expecting from your Roses fixtures this year?

“We are expecting a very high level of participation in both road and MTB events, as club membership has skyrocketed this academic year, and this is a very accessible event. Further, the high end riders are in great form and we are looking to retain the road trophy and win the MTB race, which is particularly important as this is the first year that the latter will count for points in the competition.”

Why should people come and watch your matches?

“People should come and watch the cycling because for the first time it will be easily reached, with both events taking place on campus. The road time trial will be on the newly constructed York Sport Cycle Track on Heslington East near the Sports Village and the MTB track will also be on Hes East. Also, after the serious business is over we will be having some fun exhibition events on the track such as a devil (where the last rider over the line each lap is eliminated) and an Olympic style team sprint against Lancaster which will be great to watch.”

Nouse Verdict

Cycling should be one of the most exciting events to go and watch at Roses this year. A huge eight points is on the line and after last year’s white wash York will be expecting big things from their Road Race team and their MTB team. It’s fantastic to see that the cycle track has been completed in time for Roses, and that stands York in good stead as they’ve been able to get used to the track and the course. Cycling is hugely entertaining and easily one of the most physically gruelling sports out there, after popularity of London 2012 and the Tour de France I expect our York team to be well supported as they bid to retain their Roses crown. The exhibition events should be enormous fun and hopefully will take place on the back of a York win. I tip York to take all eight Roses cycling points, with the training and dedication they’ve put in, Lancaster should be no match for them.
