Students took to the streets of York on Saturday in a bid to raise money for this year’s RAG charities, with Derwent being crowned the overall winner.

The Parade raised a huge total of £2,273. The money raised will go towards: Martin House Children’s Hospice, Refuge Action York, Teenage Cancer Trust, War Child and YUSU Volunteering.

Derwent College raised the most money, with a grand total of £887 doubling last year’s amount, and were proclaimed the winners of the Rag Parade at the Rag Bash. James came second, followed by Langwith, Halifax, Alcuin, Vanbrugh, Goodricke, and Wentworth respectively.

Derwent’s JCRC RAG Officers, Adam Seldon and Hayley Carr, reiterated their election pledge, confirming Derwent to be “the most charitable college in the UK.” Seldon commented: “It’s a constant refrain, but it stands the test of time: despite being the smallest college, we have won again.”

This year, the theme for Halifax was ‘Nintendo’; Goodricke’s was ‘Cops and Robbers’, Alcuin’s was ‘Twister’, whilst Derwent dressed as aliens and Vanbrugh went as ‘Barbie & Ken’. Langwith went Jurassic for Rag, and James College’s ‘Where’s Wally’ theme secured them the title of best dressed, as proclaimed by Councillor David Horton, the Mayor of York. James subsequently led the parade, following close behind Halifax’s recently crowned Mr and Mrs York.

Laura Watson, the James JCRC Chair, thanked the college’s RAG reps, Lauren Woodcock & Dan Ashcroft, calling the team “absolutely marvellous.” Watson revealed they had “got a team together the night before preparing for today’s event; making over 75 ‘Where’s Wally’ t-shirts, 100 hats, and over 150 ‘Where’s Wally’ flags.”

Pascal Dubois, the Alcuin JCRC Chair, described the event as “fun but freezing” adding: “Some of the costumes were more imaginative this year which was great, but I think there was generally a lower attendance.”

James College’s Vice-Chair, Cameron Lane-Ley, told Nouse that the day had been “absolutely incredible, and as Services Vice Chair I am proud for the Lord Mayor to have chosen James as best dressed college and I’m [even] happier to announce the substantial amount of money raised for RAG”.

Baxter Willis, YUSU RAG Officer, commented on RAG Week, proclaiming it “fantastic”. Willis revealed: “We’ve had over 400 people at Mr and Mrs York, over 500 people at Take Me Out and a great effort at RAG Parade despite the weather. The team and I have just counted up the ‘dollah’ and the amount is overwhelming.”

Willis stressed: “A big thank you to the RAG Committee, especially Chris Lodge, Hugo Hill, Kate Eliot and Beth Greenwood. They’ve done a brilliant job and deserve to shake the stress away tonight.”
