Mr and Mrs Halifax were awarded the title of Mr and Mrs York on Thursday evening, and the two male winners will be leading the RAG parade on Saturday. The couples collectively raised £864 for RAG, and the winner, Halifax, raised a grand total of £237. Meanwhile, James came second with £153, whilst Derwent came third with £125.
The intense contest involved a talent round, a sing-a-long round, a question round, and for the finale a round of darts and questions. Mr and Mrs Halifax entertained the crowd, playing “Moves Like Jagger” on the violin whilst the male Mrs Halifax did a striptease. Mr and Mrs Derwent entertained by playing the guitar and juggling simultaneously. However, Mr Vanbrugh downed undiluted squash and was consequently ill, forcing the contestant to abandon both his wife and the competition.
Some observers commented on the fact that the challenges did not contribute to which couple won; it was only the amount of money that they raised. Mrs Halifax, after the results were announced, said he had enjoyed the event and planned to have “a great time” leading the parade on Saturday. On the night, Mrs Derwent said that it was a fun night, with a “solid effort from all the colleges, [with] an amazing amount of money raised,” adding, “thanks to everyone who came.”
Describing the event, Chris Lodge, RAG Week coordinator, said that “the turn out’s really good,” and he commended the amount of money that had been raised. When asked about this year’s event compared to last year’s, he said, that the turnout, especially, was much better because “Mr and Mrs York” had moved to a bigger space. In 2011, it was held in the Courtyard, but this year it was held in the re-vamped James bar, The Lounge.
Although the participants and the hosts commended the event, one member of the audience commented that the “atmosphere wasn’t great” as “you couldn’t hear anything,” and that the breaks between the events were too long. While the turnout was good, many started leaving before the end, and as the event progressed, the audience became less interested in the challenges on stage.
