The men’s basketball firsts were in buoyant mood as they recorded a comfortable 100-40 over Sunderland seconds to reach the last eight of the Cup.
York were confident going into the game, with the away side coming from the league below them, and the final result was never in doubt.
They began the first quarter as they meant to continue, with Paul Tobin, Andreas Boedt and Cameron Lange racking up some early points, as York raced into an 11-1 lead.
Sunderland earned a brief reprieve but the hosts’ swift movement and passing on the breakaway was too much for them, Boedt catching the eye as he drove down the outside and scored the lay-up.
When Tobin went to the free-throw line to make it 20-7 in the final minute of the quarter, a York victory was looking inevitable.
The second quarter started with Sunderland reducing the deficit to eight points, but they were soon picked apart; George Rowland, John Taptas and Jassen Liu all scoring.
That was before the two sides traded three-pointers, captain Sam Bentley and Dan Baark’s efforts matched by those of Sunderland’s number three.
Bentley was on fine form and was instrumental in giving York a 38-22 lead at half-time.
By the start of the third quarter it seemed as though Sunderland had accepted their fate, and their day was summed up when a York pass deflected up off a Sunderland player’s arm and sailed through the net.
Tobin was on hand to add four more points to his tally, dominating the offensive rebounds, before Colin Hill went on a fabulous scoring streak, with eleven points at the end of the quarter to make it 65-33 to York.
The final quarter was even more one-sided than the rest of the match, as York scored 35 points in the final ten minutes.
With Sunderland throwing men forward in the hope of rescuing some pride, Baark, Boedt and Lange proved fast and clinical on the break, surging up the court time and again against a weary and cold opposition.
Boedt produced another magnificent drive and lay-up, while Taptas dribbled the length of the court to further York’s lead.
Hill and Rowland were being afforded far too much time and space to score with a series of jump shots, and with six seconds remaining Janis Zikans capped off a magnificent team performance with a lay-up to make it 100-40.
Afterwards, captain Bentley was understandably delighted with his side, saying, “We played much better today as a unit, which is where we were going wrong, but today we showed our potential to at least see out the rest of our games with wins. We certainly have the players to do that, Andreas and Cameron both had high points tallies but we were solid as a unit today and that was reflected in the scoreline.”
