On the final day of the college football winter league, Vanbrugh grabbed second place after thrashing a severely depleted Langwith team.

Vanbrugh’s Tom Parish scored four times to punish the men in yellow who were missing seven of their regular starting eleven.

With the smallest college on campus lacking squad depth, Vanbrugh were ruthless in their performance signalling their intentions for next term.

Within fifteen minutes of the match starting Vanbrugh had raced into a 3-0 lead.

The first goal came almost straight from kick off when Rory Sharkey was played through and made no mistake with his finish.

The second came almost as easily with a cross from Ben Stanier being diverted past Craig Burnell in the Langwith goal at the near post by Tom Parish.

It was to be a long morning for stand-in goalkeeper Burnell, who is normally a central midfielder.

However, Vanbrugh were to make it 3-0 after fifteen minutes thanks to a mistake from Burnell who failed to gather the ball; Tom Parish was lurking and had the easiest of finishes to score his second of the game.

Despite the poor start from Langwith, they continued to work tirelessly and were rewarded with the next goal in the game.

A Luke Holbrook free kick was chested down by Kieron Hazell to Paul Ong who fired past James Wilson in the Vanbrugh goal.

The next goal came soon after and it was Parish, to complete his hat trick, with the easiest of finishes after Rory Sharkey slid the ball in perfectly from the left hand side.

And it was 5-1 after a dubious refereeing decision handed Vanbrugh a penalty, with Vanbrugh captain and goalkeeper Wilson walking forward to bury the penalty.

There was to be one final blow for Langwith in the first half with energetic right midfielder Stanier crossing, only to see it fortuitously fly into the goal over a helpless Burnell.

The second half started as a much closer affair with Langwith doing their fair share of attacking.

James MacDonald, as the solitary striker, caused problems for the defensive duo of Shepherd and Wignall throughout without really testing Wilson.

This proved costly as Vanbrugh scored a quick fire double.

Stanier struck a volley which was placed expertly into the bottom corner, while Parish tapped home after great work down the right hand side from central defender, Chris Wignall. It was now 8-1.

Langwith’s misery was to be over when Elliot Rous-Ross, the prolific Vanbrugh striker, finally got himself on the scoresheet.

After a long ball drifted over the heads of the whole of the Langwith defence, Rous-Ross’ finish was assured and provided the perfect finish to a perfect ninety minutes for Vanbrugh.

After the game Langwith captain Andy Hutt was “really disappointed that there was no chance of building on last week’s result against Halifax”, while Vanbrugh captain Wilson, was happy that his team had “played well” and secured second place in the winter league with a “good finish to the season”.

  1. James Wilson says:

Good article. Just one point though. Vanbrugh had ‘Cooper’ in midfield (not Keeper). Cheers
