UNIVERSITY OF YORK 3 – UCLAN 0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19)

The Men’s Volleyball produced a commanding performance, inspired by the play of home captain Jonas Pollex, as they easily dispatched the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) 3-0 in just under an hour, the home team clinching the match which their skipper singled out as crucial to the team’s chances of survival in BUCS Northern Conference 1A.

York desperately needed a positive performance to ensure their slide down the league table didn’t continue and with the pressure to end three consecutive defeats hanging over them, York produced arguably their best performance of the year. York settled quickly and their decisive attacking flair, absent in recent weeks, flourished once more with Pollex in devastating form at the net, allowing York to race into a 16-9 lead. With UCLAN having to rely on York errors to score points, rather than their own creativity, the White Rose were able to wrap up the first set with ease 25-16.

A visibly relaxed York, feeding off a good natured and sizeable crowd, were able to carry over the form of the opening set as they began to squeeze UCLAN out of the game, winning the set 25-20 as Pollex began to find his range once more. His team mates too were displaying a ruthless streak in attack as superior York serving forced the visitors into a number of unforced errors, and while UCLAN were not to be outdone as they responded brilliantly to the York tactics producing some well rehearsed sets pieces of their own. But York were always in control as they changed gears and began to display their full array of attacking flair, throwing in fake sets, touch shots and deep spikes for good measure, Ek Srichawla in particular showing some wizardry to outwit the UCLAN defence.

York were in near celebratory mode as they closed out their first win since the opening day of the BUCS season, clinching the third set at a canter 25-19 and the relief to his team and captain was evident. “We stepped it up today, I’m really happy for everyone” Pollex said moments after the game. “We lost to them (UCLAN) in the cup and we knew we could beat their best team, I’m just happy we went out and did it”. York will face the other promoted team, Sheffield Hallam seconds in another important match next week, with a win seeing them climb into the the top three.
