Election results night – live
05.54
IF: A strange night indeed – one which it appears that none of the parties will be happy with.
Nighty night – or is that morny morn. I’m off to prepare for my 9:15 practical…
05.53
KG: we’ve fought hard and bravely but unfortunately its time to give up and go home… looks like a hung parliament lots of talking will ensue
05.52
TF It has been emotional
05.52
TF: Time to sign off from the Nouse blog. Looking like a hung parliament, won’t be confirmed until well into tomorrow though. Good morning. x

TF: Greens make history with first ever seat!
05.50
IF: Brighton Pavilion result – Greens take it
05.48
TF: Cable for Chancellor!
05.46
TF: Paxman is trying to poke all of the parties. The conclusion, Labour has failed, the Tories have failed, the lib dems have failed.
05.45
IF: Paxman to Chris Grayling (Tory shadow home secretary) – “You’ve failed”.
05.43
IF: Vince Cable’s held his seat for the LDs
05.41
TF: The messy arguments over how a government will be formed have already begun.
05.37
IF: Tories are around 10 points ahead of Labour in the vote count, yet appear to be unlikely to get a majority. Reverse those stats and Labour would have a huge majority. Furthermore, no matter how often you change the boundaries to make the system more fair, it is likely that Labour will continue to gain most from the redistribution of voters from the inner cities to the more rural constituencies. Do the Tories really not want to change the system in some way?
05.34
TF: BBC predicting 306 seats for Tories, ITV going lower with 303.
05.29
IF: Tim Montgomerie, editor of ConservativeHome, says that Tory majority is no longer possible. Alex Massie, another Tory cheerleader, agrees.
05.28
TF: Labour hold Hammersmith.
The Conservatives had high hopes for that seat. I think we can safely say the Conservatives have run out of steam, no majority today.
05.22
IF: Dimbleby wilting somewhat
05.18
IF: Tories gain Stevenage
05.16
TF: This really has been a flop for the Lib Dems
05.15
TF: Whether you agree with the system or not, it looks like Brown has the power to try and arrange a government. Will he remain PM despite losing so many seats?
05.14
KG: Labour hold on to birmingham edgebaston the first seat the tories lost in 1997
05.09
IF: In the event of a hung parliament the PM has the constitutional right to try to form a government. However, the Lib Dems wants him gone, much of the electorate want him gone, and large parts of the Labour party want him gone. Rocky road ahead, over the next few days.
05.08
IF: Hazel Blears holds her seat
05.06
TF: No BBC graphics for a while, I don’t miss them.
05.06
TF: Andrew Neil! Best sign off ever. Little tax joke at Lord Ashcroft.
05.03
TF: Lord Ashcroft, “I look forward to sitting in the House of Lords for many years to come.”
He is getting grilled Andrew Neil!
05.01
TF: Lord Ashcroft looks like a very dis-heartened man.
05.01
IF: Tory controversial non-dom donor Ashcroft pops his head up, for the first time in months. The fact that polling’s over a factor, do we think?
05.00
TF: ITV still guessing Conservatives being 23 seats short of what they need.
04.58
TF: Norwich South was the closest of the evening that I recall, only 310 votes in it!
04.56
IF: The sun is coming up and the result isn’t much clearer. Hung parliament discussions to dominate for the next few days, or Tories to attempt to declare themselves the minority government?
04.54
TF: Charles Clarke has been in his Norwich South seat for a very long time, this is a big upheaval.
04.53
Charles Clarke loses seat to Lib Dems in Norwich South
04.53
IF: Barbed comments from Ed Balls – seemingly sarcastically thanking the Tory candidate for fighting a fair and honest campaign.
04.51
TF: That was very close!
04.51
TF: Ed Balls retains his seat of Morley and Outwood.
04.46
Lib-Lab would need 135 seats plus to put the Tories out
04.44
KG: Pudsey goes Tory
04.43

04.19

TF: ITV just announced Julian Sturdy is the new MP for York Outer!!

IF: Stroud and Swindon South go Tory.
04.15
IF: Conservatives just got their 40th gain – doesn’t seem to be quite enough, half way through proceedings.
04.15
TF: What happens now? labour won’t release control, conservatives can’t declare victory and Clegg won’t have enough power to have the influence he would like. There is still a lot to happen even after all the votes are counted.

4) Labour doing as expected.
04.04
IF: Stockton South goes Tory from Labour – that’s another constituency that they needed.
04.03

TF: Felix Bungay (Uni of York Conservative chair) -
Thinks that the set up of the government would depend on how many seats the Conservatives win in the situation of a hung parliament.
First reaction in the event of hung parliament: Likely to look to smaller parties in Northern Ireland.
If this doesn’t push them over the 326 margin, may have to be a coalition with the lib dems, if labour and them cumulatively can’t make a majority.

22.01
Hi everyone, welcome to the Nouse live election blog, some say the only place spend your election night.

About bloody time!
Its a strong vote for change!
Is it significant that the BBC have put Andrew Marr with Cameron?
I see Ben Kingsley and Bruce Forsyth are giving their expert political views. Is that an attempt at glamour?! Fail.
The BBC coverage, as usual, showing why the TV license fee is well spent. David Dimbleby > Jonathan Dimbleby
oh god, had to mute the swine
BBC is annoying me! Why the silly camera angles and the moving cameras?!
Think the TV license fee has been spent on that HUGE screen in the studio. I’m sure that was in ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’?
Initial exit polls for the Lib Dems – what the fucking fuck? O_o
*stares at the screen aghast*
“Should polling stations be kept open if people are queueing?” No, they should have got there on time!
(a) what does Dom Jolly have to do with anything and (b) why are the BBC having so many technical difficulties?!
Yeah, think YSTV should do their own coverage. Studio a tad smaller, but no technical difficulties.
If conservatives actually get into power.. I really will have to leave
I really don’t think I can take much more of all this polytics!
Goodricke JCR is buzzing at the moment. Enjoying the blog and the awesome BBC cg graphics!
I love the way the first three results have come out, then everything just seems to have ground to a halt; maybe Labour are hoping that’s it…?
Hello TF!! What’s your poison tonight?
Tom, why do you think that is? That the three Sunderland seats happen so fast…
How drunk do you think all the polyticians are right now?
Its getting hot in here…
“It’s because they’re ‘all so hot’, apparently” indeed we are.
David Cameron could not be less of a LAD
Why are ITV showing 6 seats declared, 4 Labour 2 others yet the BBC say only the three Sunderland seats??? That’s quite a disparity…
did he just say love bumming brighton?
Missing postal votes in York apparently – could be bad times for your vote!
I think it is awful that people have been turned away from polling stations. Voting should be easy. The people that have been turned away weren’t even late!! I think it is an embarrassment for the electoral system, and serves to highlight the problems with democracy in our voting system!
Think it shows there just aren’t enough Church halls in Sheffield
No Tory results yet…
Also, well done to the Alliance in Northern Ireland!!
What was with the guy holding his fist up in the Kircaldy result!?!?!!
Am I alone in thinking that Brown may have, somehow, pulled a rabbit out of a hat? Just in terms of pure numbers yet through…
Also Kate- Labour have got 21 seats as I write but lost 3, while the Tories have 5 seats but gained 2 of them…
All in all, I think there is a swing underway, just it hasn’t materialised yet…
Although what the final numbers will be is beyond me…
ITV obviously following after Sky’s infamous motto: “Never wrong for long”
stats show our readers haven’t gone to bed yet – pulling an all nighter guys?
Lembit Opik’s gone!
So sad that Lembit Opik lost his seat. No more cheeky girl politics.
Andrew Neil … LAD
Dimbleby, Paxman, Neil – marry, snog, avoid?
…and there I was hoping the exit polls would be even less accurate than their YUSU equivalents.
Looks like my home constituency of Sutton and Cheam is going to go to the dogs too.
The Lib Dems are married to the sea without a doubt.
Yeah, seriously worried about Jason now, is it time to send out a search party?
btw who’s going to be labour leader at the next election?
It’s early, yet dimbleby is looking fiiiine…..thats consistency big man.
No need to shout – I’m right here! >.>
The Yorker have called York Central for Hugh Bayley but since I came off the phone to him five minutes ago (and he said that it would be about an hour), I suspect that they’re not basing it on fact. It looks likely to lean that way.
As for York Outer, it looks Conservative but there will definitely be an uproar over the issues with lost votes. Expected at about 5am, still.
Labour win Norwich North…..
Nice that you care, Nouse
Anyway, back to doing live reporting from around the city – back on later..!
Labour on 130 seats with 27.2% of the vote
Lib dems on 25 seats with 22.2% of the vote
we need a new electoral system….
Jacqui Smith just lost hugely guys….
recount in Ed Ball’s seat….
Burstow you beauty!
I can sleep happy tonight, unless of course Stroud thinks my postal vote was actually a daemon and performs some sort of night time exorcism on me.
After this long out campaigning, with that much effort, York Outer goes to the Tories? What the fuck do they *want*? Gold-plated ballot papers? A firing squad for every immigrant for a hundred miles? Anal penetration with the spiked dildo of Thatcherism a thousand times over?
AAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGH
If Clegg doesn’t attempt to prop up Labour after this catastrophe, the Liberal Democrats have well and truly failed.
PR can be thrown to the winds, as far as I’m concerned- so long as we get a non-Conservative Government. Reasonably sure the Liberals would be able to moderate Labour to a certain degree, even after this disaster.
Stelhan, just remember the Labour “catastrophe” is that fewer people have voted for them, that is all.
What’s wrong kiddies? Can’t stick it out another hour to get a clearer result? Bed time? Awwwww.
