Derwent and Alcuin have been drawn together this evening in the group stages of the 2010 College Cup. Alcuin, who eliminated Derwent 3-1 in the semi-finals en route to the trophy last year, also line up with Vanbrugh seconds, Wentworth seconds and Vanbrugh thirds in Group C.

Halifax, the defending College Football League champions, have been placed in Group B with Vanbrugh firsts, James seconds, Langwith seconds and Goodricke thirds.

Group A features Goodricke firsts, Wentworth firsts, Derwent seconds, Alcuin seconds and James thirds, and has been labelled this year’s ‘Group of Death’ in some quarters.

Finally, Group D contains James firsts, Langwith firsts, Halifax seconds, Goodricke seconds and Derwent thirds.

The competition starts early in week three, with all matches played on the Astroturf. The groups take a round-robin format with each team playing each other once. The top two teams progress into the quarter-finals, with the third and fourth placed sides going into the Plate competition.

The Group A fixture between James thirds and Goodricke firsts will kick-off the tournament at 2pm on Monday 10th May, with Derwent seconds taking on Wentworth firsts an hour later.

Alcuin firsts against Derwent firsts will be the second match of the Group C schedule, at 1pm on Thursday 13th May.

Matches will be played every Monday (2pm-4pm), Tuesday (2pm-4pm), Thursday (12pm and 3pm) and Friday (2pm-4pm) between weeks three and seven. The only exception is Thursday 13th May, when the kick-offs are 12pm and 1pm.

Mark Lund, the Halifax captain, was broadly pleased with the outcome: “I’m pleased that the firsts have avoided Derwent and Alcuin, and that we have the easier side of the draw – hopefully we’ll reach the semi-finals with ease.”

Nouse will be offering comprehensive coverage of the College Cup this year, with match reports of every game, the best photographic coverage, blogs and weekly podcasts featuring debate and analysis. Of course, we will also be running our Fantasy Football competition, which will be launching in week two. Further details are available here.

Halifax with a clear route to the final……Mark Lund organising the draw….. how convenient…..

  3. Malloy says:

I thought Alcuin were the reigning college football league champs?

  4. Brown Jason says:

    Badger,

Having an easy run in means nothing.

Last years champs Alcuin had to play James, Halifax, Derwent and Vanbrugh to claim the title, and smashed them all.

If you’re good enough you will prevail.

Get your money on Alcuin again though. They’ve reached the final for three consecutive years, and much like the Germans they’ve just got the know-how of how to progress through tournaments – even if their squad is weaker than recent years.

Don’t forget they’re unbeaten in over a calender year as well…..
