Sam Asfahani

Candidate profiles from YUSU Elections 2010

Throughout his University career, Sam Asfahani has been involved in University sport and politics.

He co-founded the University’s American Football Club, and was President of the club for two and a half years, captain for two. He describes his “proudest sporting achievement” as being selected as a coach for Great Britain Youth. Through the position of Langwith College Chair, he also gained experience in chairing meetings and organising projects.

Asfahani is currently Development Officer of the York Sport Committee. He believes this role has helped him understand “the inner workings of YorkSport, and the obstacles caused by the University’s view on sport.”

His main campaign aim is to improve the “current cyclical view of sport at York”, with policies such as “bring back coaching and refereeing clinics on campus, and restart the sports volunteer programme.”

Asfahani has turned down an offer of moving to the USA to coach American Football, to allow him to pursue the position of York Sport President
