It’s been a week of shocking weather and devastating floods in the north of England, but the rain fortunately abated long enough for a healthy schedule of BUCS sport to be played yesterday afternoon. It was a mixed day for York, with wins for the women’s hockey firsts and the men’s football seconds but a loss for the men’s rugby team in stormy conditions at Leeds.

A last gasp equaliser from captain Andy Harris gave the York men’s hockey firsts a share of the points in a 2-2 draw with York St. John. York looked dead and buried after going down 2-0 in the first half but a goal from Dan Alder on the fiftieth minute put them right back into the game. The draw ended their run of three defeats and prevented them from moving further adrift at the bottom of the table. They will look to gain three points next week against Durham fourths, who they have already beaten this season, in order get their campaign back on track.

The women’s hockey team ended their run of three straight draws with a comfortable win over Northumbria seconds. Rachael Faustino and Emily Lucas both scored in a win that consolidates the team’s position in the middle of BUCS Northern Conference 3B. The men’s seconds were less successful with a 4-0 loss against impressive league leaders Bradford. York were undone by three goals from short corners in the first half and a fourth in the second from a penalty flick.

Sandwiched between these two fixtures on the Astroturf, the men’s seconds were beaten 4-0 by Bradford, their second league reverse of the season.

The men’s rugby firsts also had a difficult day away losing 24-5 to away to Leeds Met. seconds in only their second loss in Northern Conference 1A. York struggled in wet and windy conditions and got their only points from a Gryffudd Jones try in the second half. Ben Innes was sent off in the final ten minutes to cap a bad day for York.

However, the thirds got one over on local rivals York St. John with a 21-15 away win which keeps them fourth in the BUCS League 4B table.

The football firsts continue to excel, a 4-1 away win at Newcastle their third consecutive victory in the BUCS League. In all competitions, the team are unbeaten in nearly a month and have scored 25 goals in their last five matches alone. It wasn’t enough to take them top of the standings, however, as Sheffield University continue to set the pace. York, three points behind, do, however, retain a game in hand.

The men’s football seconds had a better day at home to Sunderland seconds, winning 6-5. The victory continues their promising start of the season and keeps them joint top of Northern Conference 5B.

Elsewhere, the men’s thirds crushed Sunderland thirds 5-1 on the 22 Acres, while the fourths fell victim to some dubious refereeing decisions during their 7-1 loss at Hull. Jonny Williamson’s goal had brought York back into the game at 2-1, but Hull were awarded no less than four penalties and finished the match with one more player following the dismissal of York substitute Charlie Griffiths for dissent.

In the sports centre the men’s volleyball team lost 3-0 to Leeds Met. Entering the game as underdogs, they took a while to get going but performed excellently in their final game, in which they were narrowly beaten 25-22. Elsewhere the women’s game against Hull firsts was cancelled when York’s opponents pulled out at the last minute.

The women’s team had an afternoon off after Hull failed to raise a team, the three default points earning a second successive victory. The volleyball teams are both at home next Wednesday, with the women welcoming Sheffield Hallam and the men hosting Manchester.

On the Badminton court the men’s firsts drew 4-4 with Sheffield University. For a team finding life difficult in the heights of Northern Conference 1A it was a good result, especially against the team currently sitting second in the league.

It was a day of draws for the club, with the men’s seconds and thirds also held 4-4 against York St. John and Sheffield respectively.

The women’s fencing team stand on the brink of BUCS League glory as a fifth successive victory, this time against Leeds Met in impressive circumstances, means just one more win is required to secure BUCS League 1B. The 135-41 scoreline was the most comprehensive yet for a team who have swept aside Leeds, Durham, Bradford and Sheffield this season. Although Leeds presently top the table, York’s game in hand, at home to Northumbria next Wednesday, offers the opportunity to wrap up the silverware.

Meanwhile, the unusual clash between the men’s first and second teams resulted in an 135-58 win for the firsts, a margin of victory which pushed them to the summit of BUCS League 2B on points difference.

In the day’s lacrosse action, the men’s team returned to winning ways with a gritty 6-3 away win at Newcastle, halting a run of four successive defeats. The women’s firsts were well beaten 22-6 by Durham seconds, their third defeat to the north-east university this season, though the seconds overcame Northumbria 10-4.

The netball firsts suffered a heavy defeat away to table-topping Teesside. The 55-16 loss does little to soothe their relegation worries, but there was better news for the seconds and thirds. Away to Leeds Trinity and All Saints, the seconds held their nerve in the fourth quarter to snatch a 31-30 win, while the thirds were engaged in a similarly close match, beating Bradford 39-38.

The women’s squash team returned to winning ways with a whitewash of Bradford, but the men’s side tasted defeat against Leeds.
