Vandals strike Heslington East area

Three cases of vandalism to cars parked on Field Lane on Tuesday 17th November are currently being investigated by the North Yorkshire Police.
Two of the cars belonged to Goodricke students.
Matthew Ovenden, a mature student living in Goodricke College, parked his Seat Toledo on the residential road by the university around 4pm on Tuesday afternoon. On returning to his vehicle at 8.45pm, he found the rear passenger window smashed, along with a dent, possibly caused by an air pellet, in the rear wing bodywork and a chip on the windscreen.
Ovenden wants to “find the people responsible and stop them from getting away with it”. The attack was apparently unmotivated, as there was “nothing suggesting it was a student car”. Nothing was stolen from Ovenden’s vehicle.
There are no security cameras along the road as it is not on university property. Parking with surveillance in the Goodricke car park is free of charge for 45 minutes; currently a permit costs only £35 per year. YUSU Welfare Officer Ben Humphrys says a parking permit is a “wise purchase” for anyone bringing a car with them to university.
Ovenden stated that “it was more the financial aspect of the attack that hit me the most, it appeared a safe place to park my car, as most people in Goodricke wouldn’t walk that exact way”. The glass repairs for his car will cost around £50 but the bodywork will cost considerably more. Ovenden has now purchased a Goodricke parking permit in order to avoid similar incidents in the future.
