Wednesday 18th November – BUCS Cup Second Round
York saw off Leeds Trinity and All Saints College with ease in the second round of the BUCS cup this afternoon. A brilliant period through the second and third quarters was enough to give the home side a resounding 87-60 victory in a fast-paced, high scoring and entertaining fixture.
The game looked as if it would be a tight one when York left the court 21-19 down at the end of the first quarter. However an excellent second, where York scored 29 points to Trinity’s nine, put York well into the lead and from then the game only looked as if it would go one way. Two three-pointers from the excellent Sam Bentley, and another two from Marcus Johansson, meant York stormed into a 41-27 lead. Their opponents called a time-out to settle the team but York were to continue to rack up the points for the remainder of the quarter, as excellent defensive interceptions were converted into quick counter-attacks.
They were to continue their dominance in the third, with their defence being so good that Trinity were unable to get any points on the board until the last few minutes of the quarter. York made an excellent start, with Donadi taking two early shots and Johansson scoring an outstanding basket after receiving a pass launched from the other end of the court. He continued to convert great chances and, although Leeds began to get baskets, the sides left the pitch with the score 71-39 and the game over.

It did not look in the match’s early stages that it would be so easy for the home side. After making an assured start, with early three pointers from Bentley putting the side into the lead, Leeds clawed back and took control. Captain Dane Vishnubala called a time-out with four minutes remaining, looking to stem the flow of Trinity points, but the half continued badly and they entered the break behind. It was to be the last time that they trailed their opponents all afternoon.
Vishnubala said after the game that “everyone had a good day” on the court and that York’s brilliant defending was the edge. He said that they “took a lot of turnovers through pressure on the ball” and this had contributed to their victory.

At the start of the fourth quarter Vishnubala told his team to “go for one hundred points” and it looked, with momentum on their side that they could continue to rack up points. Yet, with the game won, the pace dipped and the flow of play was disrupted by frequent fouls in a slightly anticlimactic final period. Leeds began to add to their tally, but the gap was far too big to bridge and with a few minutes remaining Vishnubala called a time-out to congratulate his team on their victory.
