ISA by-election results


Voting took place on Thursday and Friday week 5; the results were announced this morning, Monday week 6.

President

Daria Pawlowska

Pawlowska, who is fluent in five languages, wishes to make York a more multicultural University, with increased integration of foreign and domestic students. She has gained experience as Derwent’s International Officer for Fresher’s week in 2008. The candidate was also ISA European Rep from 2008-2009. She intends to “lobby for International Reps in each College JCRC”, as well as help “improve the Prayer Room facilities” on campus.

Treasurer

Raja Shah Irshad

Irshad believes in “commitment, teamwork, dedication, desire and honesty.” Previous experience includes being treasurer for the Student Council at a college level, as well as treasurer for the house trip committee. He was also president of the Interact Club at a high school level. He intends to “get more funding for the ISA and the International Societies” and be “as transparent as possible” with regards finances.

Welfare officer

Teoh En Shi

Shi currently reads psychology. He describes himself as “friendly and approachable”, claiming he enjoys, “taking responsibility and [is] dedicated to [his] job”. He is a “good listener” who will always be there “to help out with any of your problems.”

Asian Representative

Vincent Shuai Yan

Yuan promises to increase “connections between International students [and] Local students”. As well as organising “trips to other Universities to foster links with other International Student Associations”, Yan says he would listen to what other students wanted and work to resolve their problems.

European Representative

Ileana Salloum

Salloum is currently a member of the IAPSS (International Association of Political Studies Students) executive committee. Through this role, she is working to facilitate contacts and academic opportunities for IAPSS members. She looks to continue such work in the role of European Representative.

South American Representative

Lenin Jara

Jara describes the chance to represent his “beautiful South America” as “a big challenge.” He would like to “spread south American culture” and increase connections between “International students and Local students.” Jara described his election pledge as “few words, more action”.

North American Representative

Marissa George

George was “born and raised in Washington DC”. She looks to “make sure any ideas, or views are voiced” and hopes to “do the best job” when representing the “cultural diversity” of North America.

Middle Eastern Representative

Dina Salah

Salah was the ISA’s Regional representative for the Middle East from 2008 – 2009. Her achievements in this roll include introducing halal food to some of the cafes on campus. Salah now aims to provide “more suitable events for Middle Eastern students and better facilities around campus.”

African Representative

Yashica Patel

Patel describes herself as, “an approachable person” who appreciates “different cultures”. Patel intends to ensure no student’s views go “unheard”.
