This week’s edition of the York Sport Show, produced by YSTV, is at the end of this article.

The men’s football firsts sent out a statement of intent to their BUCS League 2B title contenders with a 7-1 rout of Teesside. In an exhibition of attacking football, Mark Mcleod’s team swotted aside the north-east university to move into second place, six points behind Sheffield with a game in hand. Doubles from Connor Brennan and Chris Barnett, both from the penalty spot, plus second-half strikes by man-of-the-match Ian McKellow, Alex Tringham and Joe Brennan earned the win. Following this weekend’s Northern Universities League trip to Hull, the firsts start their BUCS Cup campaign next Wednesday travelling to Teesside fourths.

Meanwhile, the second XI were involved in a thrilling 4-4 top-of-the-table draw at Huddersfield, the third beat Sunderland 4-2 and the fourths edged past Bradford 2-1. The women’s football side recovered superbly from last week’s heavy reverse at Sheffield Hallam to crush Newcastle seconds 8-0.

The men’s rugby firsts made it four wins out of five in BUCS League 1A with a 36-15 win against Manchester. Tries from Alistair Handy, Tim Walker (twice), Tom Weir and Rupert Grant secured the victory, with two further scores contentiously disallowed. Captain Alexander Redshaw said: “This was another week, with another win. We now know we can do well in this division. This team has a lot of potential.” The firsts head to Sheffield University next as they seek to reel in Sheffield Hallam at the top of the table.

Elsewhere in the day’s rugby action, the seconds were narrowly beaten 16-10 by Sheffield Hallam, while the thirds saw off Hull 29-7.

The netball firsts held their nerve to beat Sunderland 29-23, capping a hat-trick of victories for the Netball Club. Despite a poor second and third quarter, which negated a brilliant York start, the hosts produced a timely final quarter burst through Goal Attack Sarah Fisher and Goal Shooter Claire Dinan to take the game away from their spirited guests. The seconds defeated local rivals St. John 43-26, while the thirds beat Sheffield Hallam 37-30.

There was double delight for the university’s basketball teams, with both the men and women winning. The men were comfortable against Newcastle in a 67-34 success, but the women excelled themselves to annihilate Sheffield Hallam seconds 136-10. With Claire Dinan, in her second sport of the day, outstanding, the team ripped Hallam apart in a match sewn up after just one quarter.

In the day’s badminton, the women’s firsts were held to a 4-4 draw against Durham seconds, but the men’s firsts beat Liverpool 5-3, their second successive victory in Division 1A. The men’s hockey firsts went down 5-2 away to Durham thirds, while the women’s team endured a frustrating afternoon after Newcastle held them to a third successive draw despite Emily Lucas’s first-half goal. The men’s seconds won 2-0 against Sheffield Hallam thirds.

On the lacrosse pitches, the women’s team won their second game of season – 10-8 versus Newcastle but there were away defeats for the women’s seconds (22-1 at Sheffield Hallam) and the men’s firsts (11-3 against Sheffield).

There was double success for the squash sides: the men’s firsts defeated Northumbria 3-2, while the seconds won 2-1 at home to Newcastle thirds. A mixed bag on the tennis courts, however, with defeat for the men’s and women’s firsts, a win for the men’s seconds and a draw for the men’s thirds.

Final word to the women’s volleyball team, though, who recorded a superb 3-1 away win at Sheffield.
