GOODRICKE COLLEGE 1
ALCUIN COLLEGE 1

Sunday 8th November

A late goal from Dave Coupland salvaged a point for Goodricke in their match against Alcuin last Sunday. Goodricke had dominated the second-half, but a seventy-fifth minute header from Paul Reiss had given their opponents the lead.

Alcuin Captain Miles McDermott said that it was “probably a fair result” and that it was a “scrappy game, typical of college football.” Goodricke skipper Adam Leadbeater called it was a “game of two halves.”

Alcuin did have the lion’s share of the chances in the first-half as Goodricke were unable to convert good build-up play into attempts on goal. After only a few minutes, a willing Joe Cooper run down the right side of the pitch found Parris Williams in the box, but he was unable to edge past his marker to give Alcuin the lead. Cooper had a number of further chances to put his side ahead, the best coming after he took advantage of a rare mistake from defender Chris Grayland to find himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. His shot was poor, however, and stopper Edward Foster saved easily.

There were also chances at the other end, with Coupland in particular looking a constant threat. Goodricke could have gone ahead near the end of the half when an Adam Botterill header was kept off the line by McDermott. Despite this chance, Alcuin ended the half the happier team.

Yet in the second-half, Goodricke took control of the game as Alcuin missed key player Laurie Swann, who had to leave at half-time. McDermott was twice required to defend on the line, and only a controversial offside decision stopped Goodricke striker Ed Silson from being through on goal. Goodricke’s best chance came when Silson sent a searching cross into the box, but Doug Lawson was unable to get in front of the defender. With their strike partnership not working, Lawson was brought off for Sam Lewis.

Yet Alcuin were to go ahead with a goal completely against the run of play. A brilliantly weighted corner kick from McDermott was met by Reiss who headed the ball home. It looked for a moment as if Goodricke’s chance had gone.

However, it would have been unfair on a team who had enjoyed the better of the game. Josh Barker had excellently controlled the midfield and Danny York, whom Leadbeater praised after the match, had an exceptional game. After struggling to form a partnership with Coupland in the early stages, he enjoyed a good first-half performance where he dealt competently with the right hand threat of Paul Dossosia.

Goodricke pressed and found the equaliser when Josh Barker sent a perfect dipping ball into the box. Coupland and Silson both raced to get the touch but it was he former that got there first and levelled the scores. Both sides could have won the game with chances in the closing stages, but had to be content to share the spoils.
