Appropriately, with Guy Fawkes Night tomorrow, there were plenty of fireworks in this afternoon’s BUCS fixtures. Nouse rounds up the final scores here.
The football firsts recorded their second 2-0 victory in five days, beating Hull University firsts courtesy of late goals from Connor Brennan and Dan Cox. It had appeared that York – for whom Chris Grayland and Ian McKellow were outstanding – would not gain reward for dominating proceedings on the 22 Acres, but the strikes from Brennan, his second in two games, and Cox sealed the three points. The match had earlier been delayed as the referee deemed the firsts’ pitch unsuitable for use, while Ash Daly suffered a possible broken leg.
The thirds smashed York St. John 5-1 in their BUCS League 6B match today. Not such good news for the men’s fourths, however, as they crashed 3-0 on the road to Sheffield University fourths. The women’s firsts endured a disastrous start to their campaign, losing 6-0 away to Leeds Met Carnegie thirds.
The men’s hockey firsts were beaten 2-0 by Leeds University seconds, despite being the superior team for long periods. Jack Westman and Charlie Wood scored for the visitors though York will feel frustrated at not converting their impressive passing build-up into goals. Beforehand, the seconds beat Leeds fifths 2-1 for their first win of the season – Adam Douglas scored both goals, while Tom Chevins excelled in goal for the home team. The women’s firsts grabbed a 1-1 draw away to Durham thirds in their BUCS League 3B encounter this afternoon. However, the women’s seconds were beaten 3-1 at home to Bradford.

York’s women’s basketball side bounced back form last week’s setback against Hull to comprehensively beat Northumbria seconds 67-13 away from home. The netball firsts slipped to their second consecutive league defeat, losing 25-27 against Northumbria University thirds. The third team were beaten 36-46 by Northumbria’s fourths.
Missing seven regular players, the women’s rugby team were crushed 65-0 away to Teesside, a harsh lesson on the opening day of the season. In a physical game against a side containing five England players, York suffered a number of injuries, notably Club President Kate Fullilove, who required four stitches to her eyelid.
The men’s badminton side eased to a 6-2 victory against Lancaster, their first of the season in League 1A, and continuing York’s domination over their Red Rose rivals from Roses in May. There were successes for both the men’s and women’s fencing teams this afternoon: the men’s won 126-119 away to Durham, while the women beat Bradford 134-89. Sadly, the men’s seconds couldn’t make it a hat-trick, losing narrowly to Leeds Met 123-125.

Durham’s lacrosse teams continue to hold the upper hand against York, with the women’s firsts losing 6-12 away from home. The men’s firsts, away to Leeds Met, were defeated 4-8 in a low-scoring contest. The men’s volleyball side continue to struggle to find their feet, beaten in straight sets for the third consecutive week, this time against Sheffield Hallam.
Meanwhile, the women’s tennis team continue to beat all-comers. Durham thirds were seen off 6-4 on the tennis courts today, while there was contrasting fortunes for the men’s sides. The thirds demolished York St. John 10-0 but the seconds were on the wrong side of that scoreline against Sheffield Hallam.
