Gas works to disrupt University Road throughout September

Scheduled gas works to be carried out throughout York will cause disruption along University Road throughout September and possibly the start of October.

The work, which is to be carried out by United Utilities, will mean that University Road is closed between Innovation Way Roundabout and Wentworth Roundabout. The road will be closed on September 1st and could be closed for as long as six weeks, well into the start of the academic year.

The stretch of road includes the main entrance to the University and Vanbrugh College, along Vanbrugh Way, and to Langwith College and The Courtyard, along Harewood Way. The road also provides access to one of the main car parks on campus. Without access to these routes first year students arriving in October will not easily be able to access Vanbrugh or Langwith colleges.

It is currently unclear what will happen to the First bus service, which normally uses the stretch of road to reach bus stops near Vanbrugh, Derwent, Langwith and Halifax colleges.

The work will follow six weeks of closure on Hull Road, one of the main routes between the University and the town centre.

Without access to these routes, first years will be suffering more than that, I suspect, especially New Goodricke students. Alas!

According to the article, Uni road isn’t shut at the Derwent/Hes Hall roundabout so the link between Hes East and Hew West should be ok…

The road will be shut for six (presumably Mon-Fri) weeks at the most from Sep 1st – that takes it up to Fri 9th October, a day or two before freshers move in before term starts on the 12th – not exactly “well into the start of the academic year”. The bus service will presumably terminate at the Wentworth roundabout, just like it did during roadworks last summer (and since when did the bus go to Halifax?!). It seems to me that the council have timed this as much as possible to avoid disruption to students.

Sounds true – and I meant buses from Hes East to town, not pedestrians to campus :)

  5. JC, whilst it’s not a problem for undergrad freshers, it’s gonna be inconvenient for postgrad freshers who start a week earlier and medics and PGCE students, some of whom start even earlier than that.

The works have already started it seems on Monday, with the 4 being rerouted away from University Rd and Hes Rd, with the only University stop now being Hes Hall/Derwent. The 4 only stops now at Lawrence Street and just before Melrosegate after Clifford Street going towards the Uni. Plus tehre are no posters up yet on any bus stops so if you are at a stop on Hes Road you’ll be waiting a while.
