York Sport have announced the nominees for this year’s round of awards, to be presented at their annual dinner next Friday. A total of 125 York Sport Colours will be handed out to celebrate excellence in representing many of York’s sports teams, from football to Ben Lairig, over the past twelve months.
Following a successful year of BUCS achievement, which has seen York rise six places to 41st in the overall university standings, all awards categories are expected to be tightly contested. The judges of Team of the Year must decide between the women’s senior rowing squad, the women’s lacrosse firsts, men’s rugby firsts, women’s squash team and the men’s badminton firsts.
The women’s rowing squad have consistently demonstrated their prowess this season, with powerful performances delivering regular success, most recently at the Doncaster Regatta last month. The women’s lacrosse team amassed a remarkable 136 goals in seven league matches alone, finishing second behind a Durham side who benefitted from two walkovers. The men’s rugby firsts completed their season without tasting league defeat, winning twelve from twelve, before overcoming UCLAN in a play-off to seal their place in the top northern division next year. The women’s squash team became the first York winners of a BUCS Cup competition, beating Leeds University seconds 3-1 in the final back in March. The men’s badminton firsts, going the league season unbeaten, beat Durham to promotion into the top northern division, beating their closest rivals home and away.
The Roses team of the year award will be contested between the netball firsts, who unexpectedly beat higher-division Lancaster 49-22 on the Saturday evening, karate, with a particularly dominant showing in the kumite earning a 3-1 overall win, the badminton mixed team, who romped to an 8-1 win in Friday’s opening event, and the men’s football firsts, who crushed their opponents 4-0 to bring the curtain down on the Sunday.
Club of the Year will come from either YUsnow, cheerleading, lacrosse or badminton, while exhibition of the year is between capoeira, cheerleading, pole exercise and karting.
In the individual categories, Sportsman of the Year will be decided from Mike Callis, captain of the men’s rugby first team, Michael Leahy, York Sport Treasurer and lacrosse vice-captain, Jack Savage, of the Boat Club, and Ash Clewes-Jones, Training Director for the Karate club.
Up for Sportswoman of the Year are Marlies Neuner, the snowboarder, Jess Hunter, part of the BUCS Cup winning squash team, Raeesa Chowdhury, part of the women’s senior rowing squad, and Liz Chan, member of the BUCS Cup runners-up lacrosse side.
Finally, candidates for the prestigious Service to Sport award will be Hannah Barwick-Walters, who created the York Hornets cheerleading squad, Emily Scott, the York Sport President-elect, Hugh Pryce, President of the Boat Club, and Bard Wooller, coach of the women’s rugby team, another BUCS Cup finalist.
A limited number of tickets are still available for the York Sport Dinner, in the Roger Kirk Centre, on Friday 26th June, priced £30.00 from www.yusu.org/tickets
