Script Factor
Production: Script Factor
Venue: York Theatre Royal
Date: 15/06/09
Rating: ***
The Script Factor is held in the studio of the York theatre Royal, an intimate underground performance area with a capacity of around 75 people. With the audience consisting mostly of senior ladies and gentlemen, at first I did feel slightly out of place, but as the evening went on the community feeling and the high caliber of plays made for a welcoming and interesting evening. This was an opportunity for local writers in the Yorkshire area to display their works, and even have them acted/read out for the first time with critical feedback from audience members that consisted of professional writers. To make things more interesting, there was a prize available for the best radio play – to have the chance for their play to be recorded and broadcast professionally on the York Theatre Royal website. This was decided by audience vote. Audience participation was encouraged further with the opportunity to be one of the actors reading out the plays.
The plays dealt with pressing issues such as racism, dementia, faith and the death of a child. All issues seemed to stem from the writers real experiences which were fully supported by the friendly atmosphere. For example one play dealt with a coma patient sat in a job centre reapplying for a job, was subtly used to portray a coma patient reapplying for life.
The fact that all five plays were intended for radio meant that the visual aspect of the evening relied heavily on your imagination. For students who require action and visual amusements, maybe this isn’t for you. On the other hand if you are searching for culture or alternative entertainment then maybe it is worth a visit, especially if you are a budding playwright – an evening like this would give you the opportunity to gain experience and constructive critical analysis of your work.
