Langwith scare Goodricke in compelling final group matches

In the first of the final group stage College Cup games, Goodricke narrowly avoided a shock upset against Langwith firsts in a thrilling but controversial fixture.

Twice finding themselves behind, Goodricke relied on a controversial penalty – hit home by Dom O’Shea – to win the game in the final minutes. The spot-kick, awarded for an alleged hand ball, concluded a bizarre refereeing performance reminiscent of Graham Poll during Australia v Croatia at the 2006 World Cup. As the final whistle sounded, Goodricke looked like they knew that they had just had a lucky escape. Langwith just looked furious.

Both teams started well, with Goodricke having more of the possession and chances. However, from a disputed free kick, Goodricke defender Adam Lewis, looking to make a clearance, struck the ball cleanly into his own net. Langwith held on to this lead until half time, as Goodricke pressed forward.

Goodricke looked poor in the opening stages of the second half with sloppy passing, little width and their talisman Dom O’Shea being marked out of the game by Man of the Match Laurence Chetwynd. Langwith had what looked like a clear penalty denied, as their attacking striker was tripped in clear view of the bemused referee. Goodricke looked to have escaped from jail when Dave Coupland broke through the defence and scored a superb individual goal but, to the shock of all spectators, Langwith soon restored their lead. A free kick on the edge of the Goodricke box – awarded bafflingly for a non-existent push – was cleared for a corner kick which, after a goal line scramble, was bundled over the line by Tom Parker.

It looked as if Langwith were to complete one of the shocks of the tournament, but Goodricke defender Ronan Joyce connected with a corner to level the scores. It would have probably been a fair result but the referee had different ideas. Langwith were judged to have handled in the area, a decision only given after a flurry of late appeals. Langwith looked on in frustration, at least knowing they had someone to blame for depriving them of what would have been their best result for at least three years.

In the day’s other games, a rare James Grey header from one of Liam ‘Rory Delay’ Griffin’s long throws gave Derwent Seconds a 1-0 win over James Seconds to send them into the quarter finals with Halifax from Group 4. And Udy Onwiduke popped up in a last second goal-mouth scramble to do the same job for Alcuin Seconds who pipped Halifax Seconds to the latter-stage birth in Group 1.

why is it that the most epic game to be played on the JLD got a mere 1 sentence representation on Nouse? Alcuin 3 Halifax 2?? Last minute winner to send Alcuin through and Halifax out? How is Langwith vs Goodricke more important? No disrespect to either side, but it isn’t!

No disrespect either Gibby, but Langwith produced probably their best performance in the time I’ve been at this uni, outplaying Dom O’Shea, Tom Wilson, Chris Grayland, Adam Leadbeater, Remi Remington et al. Alcuin’s match was one you really had to be there to appreciate, I feel, although it was fantastic, granted. It’s also a matter of whether we actually *have* a report from the game, if you see what I mean.

But to be honest, Goodricke are one of the favourites for the Cup, and for this reason get more column inches. I’d compare it to a cracking game in the Championship between Reading and Birmingham taking centre-stage over a report of West Brom outplaying a full-strength Man Utd team at Old Trafford as they approach the title run-in: I know which game The Times would lead with…

    That’s you told Gibby!!

  4. Dom O'Shea says:

I can see what Gibby means because, although Langwith put up a great performance against us and nearly caused an upset, both their goals were pretty fortunate so i don’t think you could say they outplayed us. In fairness they did contain us well for long periods and probably deserved a draw from the game.

Hopefully the College Cup will throw up some more interesting matches before the end of term, Derwent V Vanbrugh certainly lived up to expectations.

Didn’t get told really, considering neither side had anything to play for and in the case of Halifax and Alcuin, these “championship” sides both beat Langwith. At the end of the day, if they don’t have a report, fair enough.

if you want to do the write ups and your willing to accept responsibility then in all fairness, you have to turn up to the games and actually conduct a report. i honestly dont mind either way we won the game and its done now but i think we deserve more credit than you have given us.

Why does this O’Shea character repeat himself? Fool

If Langwith won I swear that result would not have meant much?

Yes Dom, Derwent Vs Vanbrugh was emotional…Today showed that anyone can win this cup. Two goals from a previously average striker in this tournament today, saved Vanbrugh from embarassement and also ended Derwent’s clean-sheet record so far. I now have become fully aware of the reality that a little bit of luck is needed if you expect to win this cup.

I would like to also make a few predictions from this point forward…I believe that Derwent will win this cup, it will be messy but we should do a job. The golden boot will be collected by Dom and £50 will collected by me from Udy.

Udy’s comment has to be seconded I feel, very fair in every sense. Did Nouse just decide to not watch that game then? I seem more bitter than I am, like Udy said, job is done, but we all gave everything in that game to turn around a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 and we just feel no credit has been given. Credit where credit’s due!

Jlim Sim’s (?) ‘Benitez’-esq comment is in bad taste and just poor all round – no offence, i don’t know who you are!

Anyone wonder if Jez appreciates his ‘Arran Bowen-la-Grange’ label in the photo of this article?

Arran is the name of the photographer that took that photo. We regularly have the name of the photographer next to the photo they took, both online and in the paper.

Didnt mention Langwith started with 9 players and a striker in goal…
