New leads revealed in search for Claudia Lawrence

Following the BBC’s broadcast on Crimewatch last night, North Yorkshire Police are following up new leads in the search for Claudia Lawrence. There have been up to 60 responses to the programme’s reconstruction of the University chef’s last known movements.
As well as broadcasting a new reconstruction, police revealed during the programme that there were areas in Claudia’s life that were delicate, and it has become apparent that there are elements of “complexity” to her private life that her family and friends were not aware of. This is the first time that the police have discussed these concerns publically.
Detective Superintendent Ray Galloway said: “We believe there are certain areas of Claudia’s life that remain a mystery. It is apparent that some of her relationships are complicated and are not known to her family. I would urge anyone who was in a relationship with Claudia to let us know.”
Presenter Kirsty Young urged anyone with information to get in touch, regardless of whether they thought it was best to “protect” Claudia’s reputation.
Young continued: “Despite detectives working round the clock her disappearance still remains a mystery. Her family are in limbo desperate for some answers.”
The Crimewatch programme featured the most thorough reconstruction of Claudia’s last known movements yet. It showed what police believe may have been a fateful meeting between Claudia and an unknown hooded man at 5.35am on March 19 on Melrosegate bridge. This sighting was followed an hour and a half later by another sighting by an early morning commuter, of a man and a woman arguing on University Road.
Mysterious CCTV footage from the morning of Claudia’s disappearance, showing a man walking round the back of Claudia’s house and then to the front again, was also broadcast.
The show featured the first media interview from Claudia’s sister Ali. She said: “I just find it hard to accept that people just vanish into thin air, and that’s what I can’t get my head around. There must be people out there that know, that have seen her or have seen something suspicious or who know something that’s happened.”
Claudia’s father, Peter Lawrence, also made an appeal. He said there must be a person out there that has seen something suspicious or who knows something: “Let us please know what is happening – it’s almost unbearable not knowing.”
He added: “There are some terrible moments when I sit at home and burst out crying.”
Claudia has not been seen since March 18.
Anyone who has any information regarding her disappearance, should phone 0845 6060247 or Crimestoppers, which has offered a £10,000 reward, on 0800 555111.
