The Apprentice York 2009 launched last night to a champagne reception followed by appearances by several notable speakers. The event was presented by the President of the York Entrepreneurs, Suraj Gangani, followed by words from Syed Ahmed, former contestant on The Apprentice, as well as the Lord Mayor of York John Galvin, Pro Vice Chancellor for External Affairs Dr. Chris Henshall and the northern manager of the charity Newlife, Neil Preston.

With the first day of the competition tasking the initial 15 teams to raise as much as money as possible by reselling jewellery from the charity Newlife, a sum of £3300 was successfully generated between them and donated back to the charity by the York Entrepreneurs. Once counted up, it was revealed that the teams Embla, Sphere and The Mighty Ducks were to be eliminated, having raised the least throughout the day.

Throughout the evening, the speakers repeatedly commented on the strong urgency of developing entrepreneurial skills while at university. Vice Chancellor Dr. Chris Henshall commented that by developing entrepreneurial skills, York students were capable of the ‘potential for a secondary economy’ in York that supplemented the tourism industry.
