YORK 1 LANCASTER 9
York women’s water polo team were no match for their Lancaster opponents, suffering a heavy defeat at the Archbishop Holgate school on Saturday evening. A third quarter goal from team captain Suleika Rohd-Thompsen was scant reward for the girl’s performance, though they shipped points at regular intervals and were never in contention.
The writing was on the wall when Lancaster struck the crossbar within thirty seconds of the game’s start, though the first quarter would prove to be York’s best. They conceded just the one goal after goalkeeper Michèle Schulz mishandled a powerful shot, hard luck after she had made a couple of excellent reaction saves in defiance of heavy pressure.
Unfortunately, the game slipped away in the second quarter as York were punished on every Lancaster attack, conceding four goals as the away attackers capitalised on the copious space available. To compound their misfortune, York were constantly penalised by an over-zealous official, giving Lancaster set-piece situations to assert their talents.
An incisive move early in the third quarter established a six-goal deficit but it seemed to temporarily galvanize the home team, who equalised following a well-executed set-piece and briefly looked settled into their natural rhythm.
The three goals Lancaster plundered in the final seven minutes flattered them somewhat, but the excellent finishes from close range underlined their supremacy.
