Neuner picks up first points in national competition for YUsnow

Star snowboarder Marlies Neuner achieved third place in a field of phenomenal snowsports talent at Alpe D’Huez over the Easter holidays, picking up York’s first-ever BUCS points in a national competition.
The cream of university skiers and snowboarders gathered at the French alpine resort for the British University Snowsports Championships, meaning that all YUsnow participants would encounter tough competition from the early rounds. Despite this, York’s skiers held their own against a high standard of opposition and were delighted with their results, which were delivered off the back of a highly successful season in UK-based events.
Neuner finished third in the snowboard Giant Slalom event and backed this excellent performance up with fourth place in the head-to-head Parallel Slalom and another third in the Boarder-X category. Kate Hicks came 12th in the women’s Giant Slalom, with Tom Farrow 30th and Ben Ward 41st in the larger men’s equivalent.

York’s best results in the skiing came in the women’s Super-G, with Katy Huckle 16th out of a 60-strong field, closely followed by Emily Scott, in 17th. Ben Corbey finished 51st in the men’s Super-G, with over 90 skiers taking part.

In the other components of the skiing competition, Huckle achieved a very credible 25th place in the Giant Slalom and 26th in the Slalom, edging out Scott, who was 45th in the Giant Slalom and 29th in the Slalom. York’s entrant in the male section, Corbey, ended up 56th in the Giant Slalom and 36th in the Slalom.
Having beaten Lancaster in every race at every competition throughout the season to date, YUsnow are understandably confident entering the looming Roses battle, which is being held at Rossendale, near Manchester. The club’s first national competition of the season, the King’s National Finals in Brentwood, Essex this weekend will provide the perfect preparation.
