EGM ‘very likely’ after student outrage over Summer Ball relocation decision

An anonymous YUSU source has suggested an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) to overturn the Summer Ball relocation decision is ‘very likely’.

YUSU Services and Finance Officer Matt Burton’s decision to move the annual Summer Ball to campus has been met with swift condemnation by students.

Students have set up an online petition against the move, and have demanded a campus-wide EGM vote.

The petition, written by final-year students Edward Hartwell Goose, Dan Taylor, Claire Hazelgrove and Hannah Cooper, states: “This all happened somewhat secretively, with most people completely unaware until it was printed in Vision in week 10 of Spring term. Conveniently this occurs just before the holidays begin, possibly preventing any changes from happening.”

“We would like the Grad Ball moved back to the Racecourse, for both this year – and the foreseeable future,” it concludes.

The petition currently has 212 signatures in 45 minutes. Hazelgrove has stated that she expects more than 500 before tomorrow. Taylor has told campaigners that 500 signatures will be required to force an EGM.

The proposal, which was passed in yesterday’s YUSU Council meeting, switches the location of the end-of-year event from the York Racecourse to various locations around campus.

The EGM, which would take place within 24 hours and utilise online voting, would have the power to overturn the council’s decision.

YUSU look set to confirm this decision later this afternoon.

Could this anonymous YUSU source be the top union bod spotted chatting to Mr Foy over some coffee earlier today? xoxo

I’m not quite sure what the big deal is. The Racecourse don’t exactly do amazing food, and the drinks are expensive too

I very much hope that the EGM goes forward and us third years get the summer ball we deserve!

    “various locations around campus”
    - so in other words it’ll just be another Big D?

Alcuin Student clearly didn’t go last year… I wasn’t expecting much but the food was ace. Much better than the Kirk ever kicks out.

  7. blahblah says:

And who do you have to thank for the nice food last year?

It was Matt Burton who negotiated a hot meal.

Before it was a dreadful cold meal.

3 courses of crap from the roger kirk… can’t wait…

‘alcuin student’, I’m assuming you’re either a first year or someone who neglected the opportunity to attend last year. You clearly don’t understand the magnitude of this event. It’s a celebration for students of all the hard work and dedication they have put in over their academic careers. As such, an event should be held that matches their success. The decision to have the event on campus is quite blatantly financial, and consequently selfish of YUSU. If we live in a democracy then our university should follow the same system.

Just the race course? Back in our day we were arguing that the race course was not good enough, clearly after a 4 year cycle of students this has phased into distant memory.

Why not push Mr Burton et al to find a better venue?

Campus no, race course maybe not…..

He can’t please all of the people all of the time so some will have to compromise, Im certain he will have the best interests of the Union and therefore the students at heart…

Name another venue in York that can host that many people and is affordable and I’m sure that MJB will look deeply into it – Castle Howard is remarkably more expensive and is so far away that there would be great welfare concerns. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=castle+howard&sourceid=ie7&oe=utf8&ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=54.033183,-1.021042&spn=0.225836,0.524597&z=11

The only other place in York that I can find (excluding hotels) is the National Railway Museum which apparently has a maximum capacity of 120-150. And I can’t imagine that any of the hotels in York have rooms for 600 people…

It does seem, unfortunately, to be a monopolised market and this is probably the main reason that the Racecourse charges so much. I wish that there was a great alternative venue too.
