York University Karting Club completed a successful day’s racing in the third and fourth rounds of the British Universities Karting Championship last week to climb five places in the table and now sit 29th out of 52 teams.
Excellent performances in the morning individual races – notably James Fox in 11th and Dan Ryan in 16th – gave York a promising start at Buckmore Park, taking advantage of the kind weather conditions. The team races in the afternoon saw York gain 22nd place and a superb 7th of 34 runners with Fox and Ryan again exceeding expectations.
“As expected, racing at Buckmore park was great fun; with the sun out all day, the track was dry and grippy – until the sun set on the final race where the track started to get a little slippery,” said club president Daniel Maddox, who was understandably was pleased with the performances. Maddox highlighted “very strong finishing positions in the morning individual races” and the “brilliant” final race of the day as highlights for York. York A captain James Viszkok set his squad a target of a mid-table finish earlier in the season and the team are now well on course to accomplish this.
York B struggled somewhat this round and a disastrous showing in a first team plagued by various pit-stop disasters, race saw them drive home in last place. However, a marked improvement in the second team race was a very credible achievement, finishing only two places behind York A.
“Considering all of them [York B team] were new to this track, they performed well. Andy Carpenter in particular, achieving the team’s highest finish of 25th place individually,” said Maddox.
Elsewhere for the Karting Club, round two of the Inter-Uni races against Hull University saw York gain an important win to tie the series at 1-1 going into the final race next term. The Inter-Uni competition against Hull works with a 20 minute qualifying session, followed by a 40 minute race with all competitors racing simultaneously, and points awarded for finishing positions and half-points for qualifying positions.
York won with by healthy margin with ex-student Christian Wood taking first place for the York side, Hull’s Imran Khan in second, followed by Daniel Maddox in third. Wood had established a lead of just over twenty seconds come the end of the race and his hot form also saw him register the fastest lap-time with a 50.511 second effort.
“It was a very competitive race with 2nd and 3rd postitions swapping several times a lap for the majority of the second half of the race,” said Maddox. Hull Karting President John Beagles was well-placed in second after the qualifying and looked strong as the race progressed but a mechanical failure saw him drop out after lap 5. “After his wheel flew off he went about five laps behind the leaders,” explained Maddox. “But he set the fourth fastest time which shows what he could have achieved if luck was on his side.”
York head to Llandow in Wales next and then Clay Pigeon in Dorset during the Easter vacation in the final two racing days in BUCK.
