Marlies Neuner scooped the individual snowboarding gold to cap a successful YUsnow performance at the British University Indoor Snowsports Championships (BUISC) last Wednesday. The event ran simultaneously with Ski2Help, a sponsored ski/snowboard competition involving all the universities, where YUsnow raised a very impressive £660 for The British Neurological Research Trust.

Following a strong showing at the event’s qualifiers two weeks earlier, York, going from strength to strength this year to genuinely assert themselves in university snowsports, entered the Castleford event with high expectations. Among the favourites were snowboarders Eugene Dodd, who had qualified in first position in the Northern Division, Neuner, who qualified fourth, and skier Katy Huckle, who had impressively finished seventh two weeks earlier.

In the finals, the ski team progressed through two rounds, before being eliminated at the quarter-final stage, thus cementing their status in the top eight university ski teams in Britain. The snowboard team were unfortunate in their opening race and failed to progress.

In the individual races, York’s achievements were even greater, with Neuner finishing in first position in the snowboard competition, making her the best female indoor racer in Britain, and earning qualification for the British University Snowsports Championship (BUSC) Main Event in France. Elsewhere, the male snowboarders performed very well, with Dodd finishing eighth, Max Potter 12th and Rich Ramsbottom 27th overall. In the ski individual event, Katy Huckle was 23rd, Ben Corbey 34th and York Sport presidential candidate Emily Scott 35th.

The giant strides made by YUsnow this season was recognised by winning ‘Best Newcomer Award,’ a final piece of silverware to conclude another successful day.
