York University’s Boat Club divided to conquer last weekend, participating in Head of the River events both here in York, and on the Thames in London, recording some encouraging results ahead of the BUCS Head competition in Chester this weekend, Roses and the upcoming summer regatta season.
The Women’s Senior Eight were dispatched to the Capital, racing over a 7km course against strong opposition from across the country and finishing 22nd out of 64 entrants in the Women’s Senior 4 category, with a time of 21 minutes, 35 seconds. Captain Ashley Haycock identified several positives, including York’s overall finishing position of 146th, which was their highest ever ranking and, importantly, 58 places ahead of Lancaster. Cox Ngaio Simpson kept the eight in the stream at all times, permitting them to overtake three crews and hold off those behind to boost York’s finishing position. The crew will target beating local rivals Leeds University and York City B, who were 15 and 30 seconds faster respectively, in forthcoming events.
Closer to home, YUBC’s remaining crews took to the River Ouse to tackle a 5km course. The Senior Women’s Coxless Four – featuring Sophie Mottram, Alix Odgers, Alex Mahan and Hannah Mason – finished behind Sheffield Hallam in a time of 21 minutes, 46.5 seconds, but managed to fend off the Leeds university quad by over 14 seconds.
In a promising result for the development of the club, the Novice Women’s Eight were beaten only by the competent Butler College Boat Club of Durham University in only their second competition. The eight, guided by Cox RJ Dobinson and Captain Rosy Temple, will proceed to the BUCS Head competition and Roses with confidence following this showing.
The Senior Men’s Eights produced a solid performance to come home third, behind Durham and Leeds (by only 1.6 seconds difference), in a time of 18 minutes, 31.7 seconds. The Senior Men’s Coxed Fours – consisting of Cox Ros Wood, Will Lawrence, Dan Steele, Jack Savage and James Coldwell – recorded a time of 19 minutes, 20.5 seconds in their race.
The results here show definite promise for the final competition of the Head River racing season in Chester, while the excellent support provided by the non-participating Novice Men’s squad on the riverside in York, and Ashley Haycock and Thea Hudson, who travelled to London to support, demonstrated the unity within the club.
Club President Hugh Pryce, reflecting on the weekend, said: “It’s fantastic to see all our crew’s hard work turn into good results. Especially well done to our Senior Women, for their impressive placing on the Thames, but also to the Novice Women who have come on enormously this term and look set for a great summer.”

Apparantly Will Lawrence hasn’t been the same since Jack Savage replaced him as the fastest man in the club.
Apparently Mr Lawrence has actually been relegated to the third fastest man in the boat club…
Looks like Coverdale’s new steak diet will see him descending to fourth… sorry Wilbert!
Will Lawrence is the stalwart of the club. Approach with caution.
