  1. Ben McCluskey says:

    You mis-spelt Sharpy’s surname… no ‘e’.

  2. Athene Dilke says:

Just to say, Ella Grace Kirton is also running for Student Activities, after being involved in a range of societies including Student Action

  3. I will not be running this year... says:

    Are any of these confirmed?

I’m a bit wary of the fact that Student Activities seems to be a lot more focused towards societies than towards the volunteering/charities side of things, which to me brings question marks as to the future running of the Student Action Kids Camp.

I feel it was a mistake to dispense with the SDC position…

  4. Anonymous Massive! says:

Anonymous Massive! demands to know who the above poster is! Anonymity is unacceptable!

  5. It wasn’t me, although i totally echo the opinions expressed.

Kids Camp is the best thing i have ever done at this university and to see it go would be criminal.

Either way, best of luck to everyone running! YUSU’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!

  6. I’m a bit ignorant towards the whole SA/RAG part of things, but do things like Kids Camp actually need a full-time sabb to do it?

  7. Nick says:

    Chris.

In terms of Camp, it does not NEED a full time sab to do it. But it does need someone who is fully trained in child protection, trained to train others in child protection, and to have all the various other certificates and training that Jamie, and before him Joey, have had.

Also it’s a lot of organising and planning, and I know that it takes up a lot of time for the SDC in the weeks leading up to Camp.

So it’s basically a question of who can/could run it. The Student Activities officer could run it in theory, but then they have all the other roles the Societies and Communications officer had, so it would take up a lot of time. The only other option would be for YUSU to pay for a volunteer to take up all the training and run camp as a volunteer I’d imagine. (And there’d be no shortage of volunteers I’m sure…)

I fully agree with Oliver Lester that Camp is the best thing you can do at Uni. So if it does have to go, I’m glad I got to do it…

  8. Quite simply; yes.

Kids Camp occurs twice in the summer and once during Easter. It involves about 20 volunteers and 20 children, going away for a week at a time. Having seen just a fraction of the work Jamie Tyler and Joey Ellis (SDC Officer 2007) put in, i can confidently say that it does warrant a full-time sabb.

Chris, applications for the next Kids Camp are open – you should get involved! I would hate to think what it must be like to graduate from York and be ignorant of some of the amazing things both RAG and Student Action do.

  9. Oliver Lester for Student Activities says:

I think you’ve missed someone off of your list…

  10. Concerned says:

Be careful on announcing candidates, nominations are not out yet and this may be construed as campaigning before people are officially allowed to.

    This piece is speculatory.

Also I am concerned for camp too, what an amazing project, but am told that planning is ongoing to sort out he future of it

  11. Ben McCluskey says:

Given the way the article is laid out, it would seem Nouse believe some of the rumoured candidates are definitely in the running…

  12. As I’ve done before and will do again – I’m declaring myself out of the elections.

  13. Oliver Lester for Vice-Chancellor! says:

    When is Kids’ Camp again?

  14. DJ KIC says:

Defs agree with “Concerned” on nominations. Until those forms are in we cant be certain whose running and more importantly for what! Tom looks un-contested at the moment but we saw what Tom Scott did last year !

As for the positions in general, it’s a new setup so we cant be sure how things are going to work therefore as students we need to vote for someone whose going to be dynamic and able to take on challenges that lie ahead!
