York hosts national debating competition
York Union Debating Society are to hold their first Inter-varsity competition over the weekend of week 2, which will involve debating societies from all areas of the country.
The competition allows other University debating societies to lock heads with their opponents on a topic carefully selected by voluntary judges. After being crowned runners-up in previous IV competitions, the last of which took place at the University of Sheffield, the new hosts are looking to build on pass success.
Unfortunately the York debating team will be unable to compete in the competition for lack of time. A source from the society explained, ‘although, being our own IV, we can’t have teams competing; we’ll be needing lots and lots of help running it on the day. So please put the date in your diary and come show some debating-love.’
The event takes place on campus on the 24th January. For more information you can contact the society at unionsoc@yusu.org or visit the Facebook group York Union Debating Society.

To clarify – it is not a matter of time constraint that we (York) cannot compete in this tournament – rules forbid a university participating in a tournament it is organising.

Congrats to the organisers for all of their hard work! The mood was great throughout the whole daytime and the York input was great
