UNIVERSITY OF YORK FIRSTS 36 UNIVERSITY OF SUNDERLAND FIRSTS 20
BUCS Northern Conference Women’s 4B, Wednesday 29th October 2008

The York netball team has started the year superbly, with a 36-20 win this afternoon against Sunderland to complement their narrow triumph over Northumbria last week. For their first home game, the team came out determined to win, and truly delivered. Scoring in the first minute, Goal Shooter Sarah Fisher set the standard for what would turn out to be an energetic and exciting game, which is sure to inspire the Netball squad for the rest of the season.

York were up 12- 6 by the first quarter, with Sunderland proving weak in both fitness and speed. Initially looking strong in defence, Sunderland are quickly thwarted by play from the Centre Olivia Fisher and Wing Attack Katie Brunskill. With their slick passing to Goal Attack Sarah Pycroft, the team are already showing amazing agility this year. Pycroft displays impeccable accuracy in her shooting and by the end of the first quarter York have asserted their dominance on the court, cruising comfortably ahead.

Sunderland try to pull the deficit back in the second quarter and score five goals, yet York are still moving quicker and passing smoothly, helping them to pull ahead 19-11 by the second half. Yet in the half-time interval, Captain Tess Olsen makes sure the team aren’t getting too complacent and ‘playing down’ to Sunderland.

Ready to give ‘just a notch more’, York push even harder and have an incredible third quarter. Talented new fresher Cesca Dessain steps in as Wing Attack and brings an infectious energy to the York team with some lively play and an accuracy of passing which is fun to watch. Between them, Goal Shooter Fisher and Goal Attack Pycroft score some great baskets and pull the game decisively in York’s favour at 27- 15.

Eager to secure the win in the fourth quarter, York returned to the court smiling and brimming with confidence. Sunderland look more tired yet win some opportunities and gain five more goals. New at Goal Defence for the York first team this year is Grace Marsden, who already proves to be working well with Goal Keeper, and Captain, Tess Olsen. There is a united air with York as the rest of the team and fans watch the fluid and cleanly player last quarter. The team scored a fantastic eleven more goals in what proves to be a passionate and enthusiastic atmosphere.

Wing Attack Dessain said to Nouse post-match: ‘We played so well and I’m confident this year is going to be fantastic!’ The team decided to bring in a new exercise programme into training this season and Wing Attack Brunskill states that this could well put York ‘on a win this season’. Overall the game was tightly played, a hopeful and promising start this season for the girls of the York netball team.
