I was in Sri Lanka in March 2007 but they wouldn't let us go to Trincomalee.

The situation is far more complicated than people give it credit. Like with most conflicts the situation isn't simply one of oppression. The British have the Tamils far more power than the Sinhalese and as a result independence brought a rapid reversal... during our 'governance' we helped brew racism in their society and the British government is responsible for the situation now.

It's getting worse though and it is a shame. My mother is there at the moment working with orphans and the people may be generally happy people but are petrified of what their country might become in the near future. Another Zimbabwe is rightly feared, too.

But Britain won't help and neither will most of the "Western" world. Partly because China and India are involved and they don't want to upset them but mostly because they won't gain anything but respect for helping it. No money, no oil, none of our business... Standard Western policy.

I agree with you, the government situation is very unfair and there has been alot of opression aganist the Tamil people. What is quite shocking is that a law has been passed that bans anyone from actively supporting the notion of Eelam, with a heavy punishment for those that dare to do so. Although one cannot condone the violence that is used by the LTTE this situation cannot be seen in black and white.

Well this racist Government has already ethnically cleansed thousands of Tamils and replaced them with Sinhalese settlers.

All with EU money and arms.
The EU and Canada is complicit in this crime against humanity by siding with a regime a hundred times worse than Zimbabwe for selfish interests.
