Democracy does not always produce the best results. There will be many who will legitimately point to this week’s elections as evidence of this. Yet this year has so far been nothing short of a democratic triumph when compared to the dismal records of previous ones. There are many factors to thank – the voyeurism of the Hackwood affair, the intrigue of Cap’n Scott amongst them. But YUSU deserves credit for harnessing these factors to give York the highest ever election turnout not only at this University, but in the UK. Democracy may not always work perfectly, but we should be thankful it works at all.
