Men’s Dodgeball: York 3-0 St John
When the two sides lined up on either side of the dodgeball court at the end of Wednesday afternoon, the physical advantage was clearly with York St John, who had fielded members of their notably larger rugby league team. On the York side of the court was a much smaller side comprising of members of Derwent who were looking to capitalise on a potential dexterity advantage.
This strategy did not pay off in the early going though, with York St John controlling most of the ball possession, firing at will at the scrambling York side. However, the first game ended when York, down to one player - made consecutive catches to bring on teammates to take down the lone York St John man with accurate and brutal long range shooting.
As the match progressed, it would be the rugby league players’ size that led to their downfall. York held their concentration and emerged victorious, taking all three sets and securing the pride of being Varsity crowned dodgeball champions - even if there were no points at stake.
