Men’s Basketball 1sts - York 65-50 St John
York Men’s 1sts basketball team powered to a comprehensive victory over York St. John this afternoon. Off the back of a difficult season in the BUSA league, the team played with an unexpected energy and confidence throughout and thoroughly deserved their win.
Most of the damage was done by the end of the first quarter with York taking a 24-4 lead into the second period and, apart from a brief third-quarter resurgence by York St. John, it was an advantage the home team never looked likely to relinquish. Sam Cheng was the star-man for York posting a double-double with 24 points and an incredible 13 rebounds, demonstrating the qualities that will be sorely missed after his departure at the end of the year.
York were dominant at both ends of the court for the majority of the match with a hustling defensive display that allowed the red hot Cheng plentiful opportunity to shine. York’s determined and capable defence was the springboard for victory and the team’s efforts in this regard were highly praised by captain Conor Douglas after the game. Douglas has been able to implement a new defensive flexibility into the York play in the last few months and he must take huge credit for the win.
Talking after the game he said “a team can score as many baskets as they like, but in this game if you can’t stop your opponents scoring then it’s ultimately all in vain. We’ve been working hard on some new systems recently and we are definitely in better shape for it.”
