Football Men’s 3rds - York 2-1 St John
The York Uni Men’s 3rd XI put in a dogged display this afternoon to see off a spirited St John’s team who threatened for much of the game but were unable to convert their chances. Going ahead midway through the first half from a cooly-taken penalty, York were unlucky to concede a powerfully headed goal five minutes before the half. The two sides cancelled each other out after the break, York unable to put a finish onto a number of promising counter attacks as a strong St John’s central defence muscled out York’s wingers. The telling breakthrough came ten minutes from time as York’s left winger, cutting inside and being given too much space as the defence backed off, struck a beautifully weighted right-footed shot from 25 yards, dipping over the keeper and into the top-left corner. A late scare came as St John’s pushed forward, a long ball skewing off a St John’s shin and past the far post, but York held on for a hard-fought 2-1 win.
