Womens’ committee to be opened to men

Male students at York can now officially attend the YUSU Women’s Committee after the motion to allow free access to all students passed today.

The motion ‘Womens’ Committee: open to all’, proposed by current Women’s Officer Laura Payne at last Thursday’s UGM, passed by 886 votes to 361, a majority of 71%. The motion required a majority of 66% to pass.

“I’m really glad it passed, obviously for all the reasons that we stated during the UGM,” said Payne. “We’re very happy now to welcome everyone to Women’s Committee, whether male or female, so that everyone can have their say.”

“One additional bonus of this campaign is that people now know what the Women’s Committee does,” she added. “It was never the first intention of the campaign, but if people are more aware of us now, that’s great.”

The motion was opposed by former Women’s Committee Officer, Amy Burge. “I think we did everything we could with our campaign. At the end of the day this is a democratic process and we have to respect the students’ vote,” she said in a statement.

“I was always hopeful that the motion would pass. I won’t say I was expectant, but always hopeful. We had a strong argument, but ultimately it came down to the student vote and I think the students voted right,” added Payne.

The motion had sparked campus-wide debate in the last week, with the creation of opposing Facebook groups that drew much student attention and strong poster campaigns.

The results of the UGM can currently be viewed online at the YUSU website.

Oh yes, a truly great day for democracy. Ranks up there as one of the shining beacons lighting the road towards democracy/utopia. Or not as the case may be.

Get off your jumped up high horse and try seeing the wood for the trees Taylor!
