Battle of the Bands - Heat 1

1. Superfuzz (Finished 4th)

Superfuzz started promisingly with a nice upbeat drive-time tune, but the rest of their set wasn’t quite as solid as they fell out of time on a couple of occasions. They might have benefited from a bit more onstage energy and some backing vocals.

2. Low Flying Flags (Finished 1st)

To box Low Flying Flags into a category is a very difficult task, as they moved from one style to another in the blink of an eye, accomplishing all of them with great gusto, notably in the epic 10 minute opener. They were well worthy of their victory on the night and should really be a shoe-in for the final.

3. The! Spoon? (and the). Finished 3rd

Self-proclaimed ‘pretentious students’ with an intriguing name, The! Spoon? (and the) offered an intriguing sound also. Their formula appeared to be deadpan poetry (reminiscent of John Lydon’s PIL days) read over a slow build up and then a chaotic crescendo. Quite tight, if rather obscure, they can consider themselves a bit unlucky not to have got through.

4. The Hero Status (Finished 2nd)

Offering an inoffensive brand of punk-pop, The Hero Status were well supported in numbers. The songs themselves never really got going and they too fell out of sync with each over more than once.
