It must be understood that Nick Pope singed a small piece of paper when he joined the armed services and for him to write about anything other then what he has received permission to write about, would involve him being in breech of the Secrets Act. That would bring down around is head, all sorts of troubles.
This applies to anyone in the Armed Forces and others employed in many Government departments. This basically means one can talk or write about generalized subjects but details cannot be gone into unless one has been authorized. That only happens where it concerns very silly secrets or items that are somewhat made up.
Recently we have seen the ex-head of a secret department, swear in court that our agents have never killed anyone. Perhaps I disagree with him or not, but there is know way he could have said anything else, for had he done so he would have admitted that our Governments have clodded in the murder of people for their interests and that would have been admitting a State Secret.
Therefore anything that dear old Nick writes about, must be taken with a large pinch of salt, except records that have been officially released. Even in those cases, many consist of pages a pages of blanked out text. We shall never get the whole truth of the substance of most of these files.

A very interesting, if misleading read. I see it has been reproduced by the San Francisco sentinel at:

http://www.sanfranciscosentinel.com/?p=5919

As pointed out by 'Graylien', Pope has a very inflated view of his past role at the MoD. He was more of a Public Relations spin-doctor than someone with a "defence intelligence" background. I'm surprised he isn't claiming to have been in the Special Air Service as well!

As for the 1993 cluster of UFO reports he alludes to, they were in fact several unrelated reports 'tagged on' to a satellite re-entry. For an accurate reflection of that incident, please visit my site at:

http://www.uk-ufo.org/cosford

and compare the facts with Pope's account.

Calling Pope the 'head of the UFO Project' gives a slightly misleading impression - there was no 'UFO Project' at the MOD and the bulk of Pope's working week was taken up with administrative duties entirely unconnected with UFOs.

When pressed by another researcher to explain Popes role within the MOD, the Ministry explained that:

"Mr Pope was employed as an Executive Officer in Secretariat(Air Staff) 2. The main duties of the post concern non-operational RAF activities overseas and diplomatic clearance policy for military flights abroad.

"A small percentage of time is spent dealing with reports from the public about alleged
'UFO' sightings and associated public correspondence. The Ministry of Defence has not investigated a case of alien abduction, crop circle formations or animal mutilation".

(Source: UFO Updates Mailing List)

Since leaving the MOD, Pope has carved out a career for himself as 'Britain's Fox Mulder' and has written a couple of extremely derivative books on the UFO phenomenon that were rather poorly received by other researchers in the field.

He also seems to have been giving exactly the same interview for the past 8 years - since his first book came out.

Nice article. Nick Pope is a well-spoken, thoughtful man. The only thing I might nitpick is that he, like many who are trying to remain skeptical yet cautiously optimistic about ET contact, is such a fan of the SETI logic. I will certainly be enthused if indeed a signal is finally detected; however, the logic that an advanced alien race would use a radio signal for contact is a bit shortsighted and "provincial". A 150 years ago we would have used the pony express to send/receive messages, never envisioning a wireless method would replace it eventually. Are we "waiting for the pony to come" so to speak with our ear to the cosmos? What if radio communication is irrelevent and replaced by something else in a hundred years? The problem with mainstream science is that it is unable to deal with the fact that extra-terrestrial life will probably not come to us on our terms, like in a signal from space or a microbe from Mars. It will come (or is here), and as Nick says they will be the ones who set the agenda or call the shots.
