VC declines Iraq visit

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, Brian Cantor, declined an invitation to the International Conference on Higher Education held in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, citing “security issues” as a motivating factor. Cantor was given the option to nominate another member of staff to go in his place but this was also declined.

Dr. Al-Hussaini, the conference organiser and a professor of architecture at the University of Westminister said he was “very disappointed” that no representatives from York would be attending the conference. The conference, which took place on September 4-6, aimed to assist the reconstruction of Iraqi higher education, improving the well-being and advancement of the Iraqi people.
