Points: Lancaster 4 - York 0

York 90 – Lancaster 135

The first set of matches to be fought by the women’s team was fought with the épée. As the first match started it was obvious that both teams were a little uncertain, as the game started slowly, especially in comparison to the men’s 2nds, who were fighting just beside the women’s team. York seemed to quickly take the upper hand though, racing to 5 points in the first match, and then reaching 10 in the second. As the matches progressed it appears that Lancaster managed to regain their confidence, quickly leveling the score to 14 all by the fourth game. From the point onwards, they stormed ahead, reaching the magic score of 45 first, while York managed a respectable 37.

Next they fought with the foil sword, the lightest of the three fencing swords. In these set of matches the Lancastrian team appeared masterful, and it quickly became apparently that the team were very skilled, especially when it came to fighting with the foil. York fought hard though, but it wasn’t enough, and by the time that Lancaster has hit 45 points, York was left trailing somewhat with 29.

The team was somewhat disheartened by their performance with the foil, aware that they would have to beat a team that had proven themselves to be very skilled by a very large margin in order to win overall. But even with this knowledge in mind, when it came to the last sword, the saber, the team fought hard, but were ultimately beaten. Once again Lancaster reached 45, leaving York on 34 points. Overall Lancaster managed a rather convincing win over York, with the final point score reading 135 to Lancaster and 90 points to York.
