Points: York 2 - Lancaster 0

York 135 – Lancaster 75

The mens 2nds started their match fighting with a saber, the heaviest of the three weapons used in fencing. Quickly it appeared that the Lancastrian team was going to speed ahead with points. Yet strangely enough the men’s matches seemed to mirror the women’s, taking place just beside them, because just as York had taken the lead in the women’s game, only to be beaten, with the men, York quickly recovered. Not only did they manage to quickly gain points, they also fought defensively enough to stop Lancaster from gaining points. York managed to leap from a mere 17 points midway through the game to win the saber with 45 points, whereas Lancaster, who had been beating York with 20 points at the around the half way point, only managed to gain 6 points, leading to a very convincing 45-26 win to York.

It was obvious that this impressive feat had given the York team a lot of confidence. As they started to fight with the foil, the points quickly tallied up, and soon, once again, the York team had managed to reach 45 points, while Lancaster had only managed to score 28.

Aware they now needed to beat Lancaster by a mere 9 points in the épée to be declared the overall winners; the York team pulled out all the stops, with their most convincing victory of all. The matches were furious, and over very quickly, as York managed to reach 45 points, while Lancaster were trailed behind with only 21. After all three swords had been fought; the final score was York 135 to Lancaster’s 75. It was definitely a well deserved win for the York team.
